Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour is to stay at Vogue, following yesterday's speculation that she was to be replaced in the new year.

The rumour mill went into overdrive as Gawker.com reported that Wintour was on her way out and was to be replaced by French Vogue editor, Carine Roitfeld.

The website reported that Condé Nast Publications chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr. recently flew to Paris to broker a deal with Roitfeld, which insiders believed was to discuss her taking over from Wintour in the New Year.

However, according to WWD, Newhouse has responded: "It’s the silliest rumour I ever heard. There’s no truth to it."

Roitfeld has been one of the many editors that had supposedly been lined up to succeed Wintour, however when reached by phone last night, she denied the rumour and added: "I'm very happy at Vogue France" reports WWD.

The Gawker rumour follows a New York Post article published a few weeks ago, which hinted that Wintour was contemplating retirement and had supposedly been recommending possible replacements to S.I. Newhouse. A Vogue Spokesman at the time denied the rumour and insisted it was completely unfounded.

Despite the undoubted popularity and unrivaled reputation that Wintour has, this has been a year of setbacks for the fashion legend. Men's Vogue has been cut down to two issues, Vogue Living has been suspended and copies of the flagship have been falling steadily over the past year.

However Wintour, who has just been awarded an OBE for her services to fashion, is used to turning things around and with this rumour laid to rest, we can look forward to the Queen of fashion reclaiming her throne in 2009.
