Vera Wang has dropped out of New York Fashion Week

There is no denying the economic climate is affecting next months New York Fashion Week with several big name designers, such as Vera Wang, pulling out of the event. However the Council of Fashion Designers of America has come up with some cost-saving solutions, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, a non-profit organisation, has written to the industry with its ideas for saving money.

They have suggested designers share a tent for the hour or that organisers provide a fourth venue in walking distance of Bryant Park. This could be for presentations where models pose in outfits rather than walk down the runway.

These ideas have never before been used at Fashion Week.

"If this happens this season, it would be a huge step forward," Michael Fink, fashion director for Saks Fifth Avenue said. "How many years have we all been bemoaning the fact that we have to pick and choose between three shows held at the same time all over town?"

The effect of the economy has not gone unnoticed by Fashion Week's organisers. Fern Mallis of IMG, which produces New York Fashion Week, said in a statement: "We fully realize and expected that the economy would affect some designers' ability to present a full-on runway show this season."
