H&M's latest collection

H&M has announced plans to use more recycled materials in its spring collection, MRW reports. The fashion retailer will develop new green materials such as recycled cotton, wool and polyester.

The polyester fabric will come from recycled bottles or textile remnants and the wool will be made from recycled worn out wool clothing. The cotton will come from remnants created during production.

H&M head of design Ann-Sofie Johansson said the firm was pleased to sell clothing "that are both fashionable and environmentally friendly".

She said: "We have had a fantastic response to our eco-fashion, which shows that our customers care about both the environment and design."

It is not only the clothing that is going eco-friendly at H&M though. The store is also looking into environmentally friendly packaging and carrier bags.

A spokeswoman said: "H&M is working on environmental issues in a goal-oriented manner in which the choice of materials used in packaging is a given part.

"We are looking at life cycle analyses for different materials and these show the differences do not weigh solely in favour of paper - a paper bag is not always more environmentally friendly than a plastic bag. The most important factor is how many times a plastic bag is reused after purchase."

It's great to see more and more of the fashion industry turning to environmentally friendly practices.
