London crowned 2011 world fashion capital

As a result of two royal weddings, one perfect bridesmaid and THAT McQueen/Burton dress, London has soared from third to first in the survey conducted by Global Language Monitor.

It is believed that extensive interest in the new royal Kate Middleton and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen have allowed London to pip New York to the top.

The outcome is decided based on a system which tracks the frequency of words and phrases across print, the electronic and social media. This is the first time that New York has not been first on the list for many years.

Not only has Kate Middleton secured her status as a fashion and style icon with her wedding to Prince William at Westminster Abbey in April, but with her North America tour which saw her rise to the challenge of being a new royal power couple.

Despite the legendary designer Alexander McQueen committing suicide in 2010, his name has lived on in the spirit of the dress worn by Catherine Middleton designed by his number two woman and artistic director for many years Sarah Burton.

Furthermore, the record breaking exhibition, Savage Beauty, dedicated to the talented McQueen was unveiled this year in New York.

The British designer was clearly loved and admired by many as almost 600,000 well wishers and fans made their way through the MET doors for a glimpse of some of his unique creations.

New York only dropped to number two in the survey and was followed by Paris, Milan and Los Angeles making up the top five fashion capitals.

Berlin and Singapore made it into the top 10 of the list for the first time since the survey began eight years ago.

Let's see if London can keep hold for a few more years to come!
