Sending your friend flowers ranks low on the generosity scale

Sending your friend flowers ranks low on the generosity scale

Brits are clear on what they consider to be the most generous acts of all time – and it seems that in our own lives big gestures for strangers are rated higher on the generosity skale than small acts of kindness to our nearest and dearest.

The study, commissioned by Boots Advantage Card to celebrate Britain’s Most Generous Friend, shows that when asked to rate well known acts of generosity Helen & Dave Channing, foster carers who have offered a home to over 60 children in the last 30 years far outranked a storyline on Coronation Street involving Graham Proctor offering to marry his girlfriend’s best friend so she could stay in the country.

The Channings received over a third of all votes cast (38%), whilst the Corrie storyline only received 2%. Whilst the top three acts of generosity were all real life examples, fictional acts took the bottom three places.

However, it appears that showing kindness to a stranger through donating bone marrow (67%) or volunteering for a charity (14%) is perceived as much more important than your partner making you a cup of tea in bed (2%) or sending your friend flowers, just because (1%).

As these smaller acts of kindness are often overlooked, Boots Advantage Card wants to encourage customers to show their friends teir appreciation with a small gesture of generosity.
