Betty Jackson has taken on the difficult task of making courtroom judges more fashionable by designing new robes for them to wear.

The designer has created the new garb which will become standard issue later in the year. The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Phillips, modelled the new designs for the first time yesterday.

Jackson worked for free on the project and came up with a new modern take on the traditional uniform which is more in line with that of judges accross Europe.

She also suggested in her consultation that the horse hair wigs be ditched for this modern new look but a decision on this has not yet been agreed.

The new designer robes will intially cost £450,000 each, but are estimated to save approximately £200,000 a year in the long-term, reports the Guardian.
