M.I.A. hopes her mother will be proud of her Versus for Versace range.

The controversial rapper is excited about showing off the design skills she learnt from her seamstress mum as her new collection for the Italian label launches in stores today.

She told Vogue.co.uk: "I think that it's good for my mum to see. She's a seamstress, and it's nice to be incorporating what I learnt from her working with such a crazy legendary label."

The 'Paper Planes' singer follows in the footsteps of Christopher Kane and JW Anderson says she is "very flattered" to be the first non-designer to be given free reign to create pieces for Versace's sister brand.

M.I.A. insisted she wasn't nervous about her fashion debut, quipping, "What for?", before explaining, "Well, I made things to hang out in and be chill. This collection is for people who are not afraid to be out there."

The range comprises T-shirts, dresses, leggings and shirts emblazoned with copycat versions of famous Versace motifs, which the star says is in keeping with her personal style.

M.I.A. explained said: "Counterfeits are something I've always had and collected and I would also collect a lot of vintage Versace from the 90s. Sometimes I like the copies better and sometimes I like the original.

"I felt that there needed to be a bridge between both or definitely a mix-up, so it's really a collaboration between Versace and the bootlegs."
