We love listening to their music, watching their films and admiring them on the red carpet but do we really want to wear their clothes?

With Sarah Jessica Parker having just launched her 'Bitten' line and Victoria Beckham revealing her 'DVB' collections next week there seems to be a sudden uprising in celebrities producing clothes.

SJP and Posh are not the first celebs to dip their designer shoe covered toes into the fashion industry pool. Past celeb fashionatas include the likes of J-Lo, Gwen Stefani and even hard man rapper Jay Z.

But are they as good at designing fashion as they are at wearing it? And do we really want to wear clothes created by people who have never been near the door of a fashion school-regardless of how famous they are?

Unlike most Gwen Stefani had actually began designing clothes before she became famous. According to her New York Fashion week profile Gwen used to create her own ensembles at home with her mum before she made it big as the lead singer of No Doubt.

Nowadays her LAMB (Love Angel Music Baby)collections can be seen on catwalks all over the world and Gwen's designs are in high demand. However the experts still don't rate her as a credible designer. “Stefani has made a name for herself as both a designer and a fashion plate. Though reviews of her latest collections have been anything but great, Stefani is still in demand, possibly more for her public persona than her designs.” commented New York Magazine.

Rapper Jay Z is another celebrity designer to make it big. His Rocawear label has been a massive hit with teenagers everywhere. Based around streetwear staples like knit tracksuits, dark denim, leather bomber jackets and fur-lined hoodies, Rocawear was originally targeted to young men but now includes a women's line as well.

Unfortunately celebrity clothes tend to come with a celebrity price tag too. Jay Z may claim he's bringing style to the streets but is a hoody priced at £65 really affordable for the average teenager?

However Rocawear prices are pennies in comparison to other designer celebrities brands and not surprisingly Victoria Beckham is up there with the high rollers. DVB is launched in Saks Fifth Avenue next week and with sunglasses selling at around £150, the Beckham look certainly promises to be a Posh one.

Sarah Jessica Parker is aiming to put an end to over-priced celebrity fashion with her affordable Bitten range. Her clothes are being sold at discount fashion store Steve and Barry's and every item costs less than $20 (£10).

Early reviews have praised SJP for bringing her great casual t-shirts and wearable tunic dresses to the average woman so perhaps other celebrities should watch and learn.

Surely bringing great style to the majority is a much better way to use your fame than bankrupting loyal fans with over-priced over-hyped attempts at fashion design.
