Will designer bags become a thing of the past?

Will designer bags become a thing of the past?

A Fashion Endangered Species list has been created by WWD in light of the impending recession.

It lists those businesses most likely to fail in the uncertain economic climate of 2009.

Celebrity fashion lines unsurprisingly feature on the list. Since celebs usually add little more than their name to the products why would designers want the cost of securing them when they can design the product themselves.

Expensive handbags also appear on the list. With prices of luxury handbags hitting tens of thousands in recent years it is no surprise that the desire for the current It bag is faltering. We'll now be snapping up cheaper bags or possibly just using one we already have.

Young designers will also be dying out it appears. With 250 designers showing at the last New York Fashion Week, up from 150 five years ago, it may be about time these were reduced. Let designers make a name for themselves at an established fashion house before being let loose on their own.

High priced designer labels with limited distribution make the list, at these credit crunch times products need to be available to as many people as possible. Nobody's going to buy items they can't get.

Finishing off the list are companies with less than $10 million in sales and menswear, particularly tailored clothing, is this going to mean naked men roaming the streets? Oooh we do hope so!

We look forward to seeing how accurate this list is at the end of the year!
