Don't let your baby bump affect your style

Don't let your baby bump affect your style

Baby bumps are all part of the beautiful blooming journey, but knowing how to dress them and having the money to fill your maternity wardrobe are different matters. That’s why new mum Jenni Falconer and celebrity stylist Alex Longmore are encouraging mums to save the pennies and swish their way to style this summer. The pair have teamed up with Persil Non-Bio and Comfort Pure to inspire mums and expectant mums to hold Maternity Swishing parties to swap maternity and baby clothes, whilst raising money for baby charity, Tommy’s.

One mum’s trash is another mum’s treasure, so Jenni and Alex will be launching the campaign by hosting the first ever Maternity Swishing party. Mums and mums-to-be will wash then swap their maternity outfits and baby clothes, with all those attending making a donation to Tommy’s.

Jenni Falconer says: “I am very excited to be hosting the first ever Maternity Swishing party, with Persil Non-Bio and Comfort Pure. Being a mum and having many friends who are mums, I know that we often have maternity and baby clothes that could be donated to a better home. I want to encourage as many women as possible to hold their own party this summer and raise money for Tommy’s, an extremely deserving charity. ”

Alex Longmore's Maternity Style Tips

1. For daytime relaxed elegance, match a figure hugging dark top with a printed scarf (pashmina in size) and a pair of maternity jeans. Wear this with your usual staples such as a faithful pair of converse trainers and you will certainly put emphasis on the yummy in mummy!

2. Feel confident enough to show a little bit of flesh in the evening. Skin exposed on décolletage, arms and legs will balance your bump and leave you looking in proportion. If you feel over-exposed, simply wrap a scarf around you to draw attention away.

3. Take a tip from the celebrities – they always mix maternity wear with mainline clothes. Buy a size or two up and mix them with pregnancy items, such as a stretchy wrap top with cool leather jacket or bolero.

4. Size matters; if you’re tall make sure you wear something that shows off your legs, if you’re petite then stick to tight tops and baggy trousers. Remember, it is a balancing act.

5. Often the 3-5 months stage is the most difficult to dress, when you’re not quite big enough for maternity styles! This is the time to wear loose style tops, jeans and everything just that bit bigger than you normally would.

6. For those days when nothing works, a black wrap dress should still be your staple.

7. Always buy for the moment when purchasing maternity wear. Buying months in advance is a bad idea as you don’t know how you will look as your bump grows, so go month by month.

8. Maternity dressing can be expensive, so if you don’t want to blow the budget, swishing is a great idea. Persil Non-Bio and Comfort Pure are encouraging mums to hold their own Maternity Swishing parties, where you can wash and swap maternity wear and baby clothes with your friends and family. It’s the perfect way to uncover some fabulous maternity clothes from friends who no longer need them.

9. I believe if the inner mummy is happy the outer mummy will look great, as looking good essentially comes from within! Sleeping, exercising and eating well can do wonders for the body, and you will look and feel amazing.
