Etro SS09

Etro SS09

Folklore has a new function in SS09's fashion forecast, as the new Russian Revolution finally hits the high street, just as the masses of January sales start to near their end.

Furry gilets, graphic prints, and masses of fringing are set to be big news in the upcoming year, taking some fashion notes from last season's massive harlequin and circus trends.

This new take on the trend is a lot more structured boho than in previous seasons, as tailoring is sharper, accessories make more of a statement and the prints are much more vibrant, rather than relaxed.

Sienna Miller first reinvented boho, in the eyes of many fashionistas back in 2004 and last summer saw us reach for our furry gilets once again, as they became the epitome of festival chic.

The Wild West and the Orient, already major trends in their own right for the upcoming year, have inspired the new Russian revolution too, as fringed skirts teamed with sheer folk prints will be a big look for the season.

Similarly teaming a folk dress with an obi belt and embellished footwear will update your old folk look of yesteryear, and give the fashion edge on others.

Etro clashed prints in their SS09 runway show, teaming cute folk jackets with billowing paisley printed pants. Meanwhile Roberto Cavalli and Christian Lacroix focused on making prints their focal point in both the mid-length and maxi dress, teamed with bold statement necklaces.

What we're loving about this season and its latest trends is that everything is so accessible, and what's more can be mixed and matched to create new looks.

It seems as though the fashion world and its designers have finally realised we're in a recession, and looking fabulous on a budget now goes without saying!

Here's our pick on key pieces to work the new folk look...
