Mum has the biggest influence on our fashion and beauty

Moisturising day and night and experimenting with fashion are just two of the tips style conscious Brits are given by their mums and grans, according to a new study.

The research by PromotionalCodes.org.uk asked women to share the fashion and beauty tips their female relatives have given them, and then asked which ones they follow

Moisturising and skincare came out of top with more than nine out of ten of those questioned, 91%, saying this is the best tip they’ve been given.

One woman said: “When I was a teenager I always thought my mum’s advice was rubbish. Now I’m older and have kids of my own, I get it. The best tip mum gave me was to look after my skin. I’ve cleansed and moisturised for years and it certainly pays off. My mum’s always followed a good skin care regime and she looks amazing – I hope I look as good when I reach her age.”

This was followed by another classic beauty tip – always remove make up before going to bed – with 79% claiming they follow this to the letter, thanks to mum.

Invest in good support wear was a tip passed onto 63% of those questioned with many adding as they’ve got older, they understand the wisdom of this piece of advice.

Over half of those questioned, 51%, said their mum and gran advised them to invest in one never fail outfit including a good little black dress and a classic suit.

Never wear a black bra under a white top was a tip 49% of the women had been given by mum with just under a quarter, 23% saying a top piece of advice is to find a good hairdresser and stay with them.

Another woman said: “It’s the really obvious pearls of wisdom that are the best – like investing in good support underwear and never wearing a black bra under a white top. I see people get this wrong so often. It leaves me wanting to shout out why?”

Always wear heels for a special occasion and don’t be afraid to experiment with fashion were tips given to 21% and 15% respectively.

Co-ordinating accessories was a popular tip for 12% with ‘vertical stripes are slimming, horizontal make you look fat’ a top piece of advice for 11%.

A third added: “My gran was the best when it came to passing on her great tips. As a kid I loved dressing up in all her gorgeous dresses, hats and shoes and playing with her make up. The best tip she ever gave me was to take my make up off before bed. If I ever forget I look an absolute state in the morning.”

A spokesperson for PromotionalCodes.org.uk said: “Despite never believing a word your mum says as you’re growing up, as you get older you begin to understand that she does know what she’s talking about.

“Mums and grans do pass on the best tips when it comes to fashion and beauty – they’ve been there, done that so will be spot on with their advice. They’re often better to turn to than friends, after all, you’ve inherited their genes so if it works for them, it’ll probably work for you too.”
