We’re always being warned about global warming, climate change and a rise in air pollution in major cities, but how far would you go to save our planet?

Rising petrol costs and rising insurance costs also mean that running a car is becoming more and more expensive year on year.

Not only that but we all know that public transport is more environmentally friendly. In the face of economic difficulties would you consider giving up your car to save money and the planet?

A survey done by Hastings Direct in 2012 showed that should petrol costs reach £2 per litre, one in five drivers would give up their car completely, whilst over 10% would buy a hybrid or electric car.

With a lot of people having the opportunity to take advantage of public transport on their doorstep, we could be seeing the slow decline of people becoming dependent on their cars.

There are plenty of benefits to switching to public transport, and not just for the environment.

Using public transport will encourage a higher level of exercise on a regular basis, as you’ll most likely need to walk to get a bus or a train.

Then there’s the cost side of things. If you can make the most of any deals, bus passes or railcards, you’ll be able to freely travel at a discount price.

The one thing that public transport can’t offer us is convenience. Although one in five claim they would give up their car should petrol prices reach £2 per litre, would we really be able to let go of our most convenient form of transport?

It's almost as if we're being priced into saving our planet with rising costs meaning hybrid or electric alternatives are becoming more attractive. Of course it's beneficial for the planet and that can only be a good thing, but is it right that the cost for saving the planet is coming out of consumers' pockets rather than companies' profits?
