Forget the diets, giving up smoking and all the usual new years resolutions we always make and subsequently break, road safety champion GEM Motoring Assist is urging all drivers to make reading the new Highway Code their New Years Resolution.

GEM, formerly known as the Guild of Experienced Motorists, is concerned that very few people revisit the Highway Code once they have passed their test. Despite being around for 75 years, driving conditions have changed and motorists must keep up to date with new regulations.

features a safety code for new drivers to help them through the very vulnerable first 12 months

In summary, the new edition that was issued in September contains 29 more rules than before - it includes a new section on rules for users of powered wheelchairs and powered scooters; features a safety code for new drivers to help them through the very vulnerable first 12 months; it explains new legislation on vehicle emissions and smoking in vehicles that are used for work plus outlines new road initiatives like home zones and quiet lanes active traffic management schemes.

So, any unwanted books received as gifts this Christmas could be exchanged for the new Highway code that is, after all, essential reading for all road users whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders or drivers.

But hurry, best get to the shops quick before they run out. That’s all we need straight after Christmas, more panic buying.
