After coming under a barrage of criticism from the critic when it premiered last week Baz Luhrman's epic Australia leads the 13th Annual Satellite Award nominations with nine nods.

However many of these nominations come in the technical areas and failed to make the Best Motion Picture Drama category. Frost/Nixon, Frozen River, Milk, The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire will all fight it out for the top prize.

Milk and British picture Slumdog Millionaire, which did well at the British Independent Film Awards earlier this week, both have six nominations each including appearances in Best Director and Best Actor for Sean Penn.

Meryl Streep has two acting awards in the two Best Actress categories as she finds herself nominated for both Doubt and musical Mamma Mia!

All the actresses that have been tipped to fight it out for Best Actress at the Oscars: Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Kristen Scott Thomas and Anne Hathaway all joining Streep.

The Best Actor category was equally predictable as Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn, Frank Langella and Leonardo DiCaprio all get the nod.

However there were some notable movies missing as David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received only a nomination for original screenplay while Che, a festival favourite, Defiance and Gran Torino were snubbed altogether.

There was also a posthumous nomination for Heath Ledger for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight and an Oscar nomination is looking ever more likely.

The awards will be presented in on December 14th in Los Angeles.
