Torn between a life of comfort with a wealthy new suitor and a failing loyalty to a desperate husband, a destitute woman must make a painful decision in this endearing new drama from the director of Divided We Fall and Up and Down.

When his finances are torn apart by the tragic Prague floods of 2002, Jarda must resort to stripping stolen cars to feed his family.

Unable to handle the pressure of his criminal activities, his wife Marcela takes her two children and moves into her mother's house, only to find a different set of challenges presented by her ailing, angry step-father who mistreats the children.

It is only when Marcela's life crosses paths with Bene?, a wealthy man who has returned from Tuscany to reclaim his long-lost Czech identity, that her situation begins to look up. Desperate for a safe home for her and her children, she is tempted by their gently blossoming relationship.

But when Jarda returns from a brief jail stint to reclaim his wife and children, Marcela must chose between the safety of wealth and the comfort of history.

Director Jan Hrebejk is in top form here, getting the most from his talented ensemble cast. No stranger to mixing political and social issues with basic human conflict, he creates an affecting metaphor for the allure of western culture in post-Communist society in this intelligent comic drama.-- Philadelphia Film Festival
