This week sees the release of Tropic Thunder which brings together Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr in this comedy spoof war movie.

A group of pampered actors are making the most expensive movie ever made and soon after the production begins the actors are thrown into a real-life situation and are forced to become the fighting unit they're portraying, in order to find a way out of the jungle in one piece.

A troupe of actors, under the impression they're making a Vietnam war movie, wanders dangerously in the jungle and is captured by a gang of druglords who think the actors are narcs.

Director and star Ben Stiller had intended to keep Tom Cruise's cameo role in the film as a fat, balding movie mogul a surprise other cameo roles in the film include Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

So to celebrate what is being dubbed as one of the best cameos that you will see this year FemaleFirst looks back over some of the most successful cameo appearances.

Leading the way is Brad Pitt in the Quentin Tarantino written True Romance having made a big impact with Thelma and Louise Brad turned up as Floyd.

A stoner Pitt's character, in his few scenes, is completely high on marijuana. But Pitt wasn't the only big named actor to appear in True Romance as Samuel L Jackson, Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer all had little roles.

Another cameo for the actor came in 2002 in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind as he and Matt Damon turned up in their mate George Clooney's directorial debut.

While maybe not considered a cameo role Robert De Niro as Captain Shakespeare was one of the smaller parts in last year's Stardust.

Captain of a sky vessel Shakespeare is a notorious pirate with a fearsome reputation but his secret is revealed when Septimus finds him dressed in a pink dress and feather boa, twirling around his cabin.

Never before will Robert De Niro be seen in a dress and feather boa legend!

A string of actors came together to take small roles in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 movie Pulp Fiction, including the director himself.

Tim Roth returned after his role in Reservoir Dogs as Pumpkin - Ringo who holds up the diner with Honey Bunny - Yolanda, played by Amanda Plummer. Also making a reappearance in a Tarantino movie was Harvey Keitel as Winston 'The Wolf' Wolfe, a role written specifically for the actor.

But the winning cameo role of the film went to Christopher Walken as Captain Koons who had the unenviable task of explaining to a young Butch where he hid his father's watch.

Similarly a whole host of stars including Tim Robbins, Luke Wilson and Ben Stiller all appeared in the fight scene in the popular 2004 movie.

Hollywood hardman Bruce Willis turned up as himself in Ocean's Twelve in a bizarre plot twist where Tess, played by Julia Roberts, pretended to be Julia Roberts. And Sean Connery became Richard the Lion Heart at the end of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves to give away Marion.

But Stiller and co have played their cards very close to their chests and images of Tom Cruise in his role as film boss Les Grossman have been kept under wraps.

Tropic Thunder is released 19th September
