End Of Watch

End Of Watch

End of Watch hits the big screen this week and sees Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena team up to fight crime on the streets of L.A.

To celebrate the release of the film we take a look at some of the best cop partnerships that have hit the big screen over the years.

- Jake Gyllenhaal & Michael Pena (End of Watch)

Seeing as we are celebrating the release of End of Watch it is only right that we start with the partnership of Gyllenhaal and Pena.

The movie was one of the big attractions at the BFI London Film Festival and this central partnership really makes the movie work.

There is a genuine relationship that exists between these two characters and you really do believe that they would take a bullet for one another.

The best of the comedy moments in the movie come from the banter between the pair and they really do drive this movie and the storyline forward.

- Mel Gibson & Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon)

Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon, which was released back in 1987 would you believe, is the ultimate buddy cop movie, and I have to admit my personal favourite.

But it's the partnership of soon to be retired cop Roger Murtaugh, Danny Glover, and the nothing to lose Martin Riggs, the rather lovely Mel Gibson, that is the real core of this movie.

While Murtaugh is horrified with the way in which Riggs goes about policing the pair soon find themselves trying to save Murtagh's daughter, and working very well together in the process.

The trust that develops between the pair makes Murtaugh re-think his future delaying his retirement. Three other movies were made and Riggs and Murtaugh remain the best cop partnership.

- Will Smith & Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys)

It is hard to believe that Bad Boys was released back in 1995 and saw Smith and Lawrence fighting crime in the Michael Bay directed movie.

Smith and Lawrence bring a real energy to this movie and their lively personalities really work well together.

Marcus Burnett is a hen-pecked family man. Mike Lowry is a foot-loose and fancy free ladies' man and these two opposites really do allow from some great comedy moments.

And while the pair may bicker and fight there is a real friendship at the core of their relationship - and that is what makes this movie so great.

Bad Boys II followed in 2003 and there are rumours that the duo are set to reunite for a third outing together.

- Dan Aykroyd & Tom Hanks (Dragnet)

If there is one comp movie that is a laugh a minute then it is the fantastic cop-spoof Dragnet.

Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday a cop who does everything by the book while Hank's character Streebek is more laid back and shoots from the hip.

The two opposites allows from some great comedic moments as they pair really do banter well together.

- Eddie Murphy & Nick Nolte (48Hours)

48 Hrs was Murphy's big screen debut that paired him with actor Nick Nolte that is often regarded as one of the best and first buddy movies.

Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is a tough, super-jaded cop who springs a hard luck robber, Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), from jail for two days to help nab his former partners.

The two men form a kind of friendship (based on mutual hatred) as they chase a trio of remorseless villains through the streets of San Francisco and Cates finds that Hammond's streetwise method of finding the criminals is possibly even more effective than his own by-the-book police procedures.

End of Watch is released 23rd November
