Helen Hunt is one of the actresses that everyone is talking about at the moment with her new movie The Sessions - a role which has bagged her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

The Sessions hits the big screen this week and we have taken a look back over Hunt's forty year career to pick out some of her best roles.

Mad About You

Helen Hunt has had a successful career in TV as well as on the big screen and Mad About You was her bit television hit.

She took on the role of Jamie Stemple Buchman from 1992 until 1999 in the NBC sitcom which also starred Paul Reiser and Anne Ramsay.

Hunt and Reiser played a newly married couple and the series followed their relationship and struggles.

The film was a huge hit during the nineties and it was the most high profile role of Hunt's career.

She went on to win a string of Emmy Awards, Golden Globes and Screen actors Guild Awards for her performances.

Twister

In 1996 Hunt enjoyed her biggest movie hit as she starred in Twister, which was directed by Jan de Bont.

The movie saw her take on the role of Dr. Jo Harding, a meteorologist who chases twisters in a bid to gather more information about them.

Bill Paxton plays Jo's soon to be ex-husband but their pair find themselves thrust together once more as the storms draw in.

Twister was one of the biggest blockbuster films of 1996 as it went on to gross in excess of $494 million at the global box office.

The movie remains one of Hunt's most financially successful movies.

As Good As It Gets

She was the toast of Hollywood in 1997 when she delivered the best performance of her career with As Good As It Gets.

The romantic comedy with directed by James L. Brooks and saw Hunt team up with Jack Nicholson and Greg Kinnear.

A single mother/waitress, a misanthropic author, and a gay artist form an unlikely friendship after the artist is in an accident.

The movie mixed smart dialogue with high calibre acting to produce a movie that is both funny and moving - with both Hunt and Nicholson delivering superb performances.

Hunt went on to win the Best Actress Oscar for her central performance with what was her very first nomination.

The Sessions

The Sessions sees her back in Oscar contention as she has received a Best Supporting Actress nomination of her role.

The movie is directed by Ben Lewin and is based on an essay written by Mark O’Brien, a man paralysed from the neck down who hires a sex surrogate to lose his virginity.

Hunt plays the sex surrogate in the movie alongside John Hawkes, who has also been heavily praised for his work on the film.

The Sessions is a very different kind of love story and breaks many traditions and taboos along the way.

Other Helen Hunt movies to catch are Bobby and What Women Want, while she made her directorial debut in 2007 with Then She Found Me.

The Sessions is released 18th January
