New Moon

New Moon

We might have looked back over the book adaptations that have hit cinema screens this year, and they really have varied in the amount of success, as The Time Traveler's Wife Is released this week but it's time to look at what we have got to look forward to.

And believe me this really is a genre of film that has plenty of steam as the book adaptation movies are queuing around the block to make it onto the silver screen.

After dominating the Teen Choice Awards earlier this week there is a new found excitement around the Twilight Saga with the release of New Moon in November.

New Moon is the second Stepehenie Meyer book to be adapted after the success of Twilight last year, it was inevitable that the sequel would get the green light almost immediately.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are back as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Bella's life is turned upside down when her vampire lover Edward decides to leave Forks in a bid to protect her.

But she is drawn from her despair by rekindling her friendship with Jacob Black, soon she is drawn into a world of vampires as someone from her recent past is on the hunt for her.

Catherine Hardwicke isn't returning to the director's chair for this movie instead it's Chris Weitz, who was behind The Golden Compass, that has helmed the movie.

With Eclipse, the third novel on the series on the horizon for summer 2010, New Moon looks set to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

Peter Jackson hasn't directed a movie since his remake of King Kong back in 2005. But in January the filmmaker will return with his adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones.

The book was released back in 2002 and was, at the time, the book to read. The story follows Susie Salmon who is raped and murdered by a neighbour.

Susie finds herself in heaven and watches over her family as they grieve for her and try to uncover the truth about their daughter's death.

She is also watching her killer who is preparing to kill again after getting away with murdering Susie.

There are already Oscar whispers surrounding Jackson's adaptation of this novel as he once again called on Fran Wash and Philippa Boyens to help him pen the script.

It was only a matter of time before Leonardo DiCaprio teamed up with his old directing mate Martin Scorsese for another movie... and it comes in the form of Shutter Island.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane and sees DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams all join forces.

It’s 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital.

He’s been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Shutter Island is released 9th October will there be more Oscar success for the DiCaprio/Scorsese partnership.

After a string of delays Christmas should, hopefully, see Where the Wild Things Are make it into cinemas.

Directed by maverick filmmaker Spike Jonze the film is based on Maurice Sendak 1963 children's book of the same name.

The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are.

Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions.

The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule.  When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy.

Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally though.

Where the Wild Things Are has been a long time coming and looks set to be one of the most enchanting movies this Christmas.

Other book adaptations that are on the way include The Road, which stars Viggo Mortenson, Precious and Johnny Depp's new movie The Rum Diaries.

The Time Traveler's Wife is released 14th August.
