Channing Tatum in The Eagle

Channing Tatum in The Eagle

Channing Tatum is one of the most in demand young actors currently working in Hollywood - and he is back on the big screen this week with his new movie The Eagle.

Based on the novel The Eagle of the Ninth the movie sees Tatum team up with director Kevin MacDonald and British actor Jamie Bell.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at how Tatum has mixed and matched his roles in recent years.

Step Up

Despite roles in Coach Carter and She's The Man it was the character of Tyler Gage in dance movie Step Up that proved to be the breakthrough for Tatum.

Starring alongside Jenna Dewan, how would become his wife, the movie kicked off the dance movie craze of the last few years.

Tyler Gage is a rebel from the wrong side of Baltimore's tracks--and the only thing that stands between him and an unfulfilled life are his dreams of one day making it out of there.

Nora Clark on the other hand is a privileged ballet dancer but when the pair find thrown together for a showcase - that will determine their future - they must work together.

The movie went on to gross in excess off $114 million worldwide, as well as kicking off a franchise.

Stop Loss

Not one to stick with the same genre Stop-Loss saw him tackle the war movie as he teamed up with Ryan Phillippe in the Kimberly Peirce directed movie.

A veteran soldier returns from his completed tour of duty in Iraq, only to find his life turned upside down when he is arbitrarily ordered to return to field duty by the Army.

Tatum took on the role of Sever Shriver who is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq.

The film really does delve into what happens to soldiers when they return from tours of duty and are left to integrate back into society without help from the military.

Despite positive reviews upon release the movie didn't do anywhere near as well at the box office as it should have.

Fighting

Just a year later and it was change of genre again as led the cast in Dito Montiel's Fighting.

In New York City, a young counterfeiter is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist, who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit.

While the movie was criticised for it's thin plot Tatum grabbed everyone's attention with his central performance and from this movie on the actor has not looked back

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

2009 saw him step into the big budget blockbuster for the very first time as G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra blasted onto the big screen during the summer season.

An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

In the role of Duke, Tatum starred alongside a top cast that included Dennis Quaid, Christopher Eccleston, Sienna Miller and Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Despite mixed reviews the movie went on to take in excess of $302 million worldwide.

If you accept the movie for what it is then G.I Joe is a great piece of escapist cinema that should just be enjoyed.

Dear John

To show that he was just an action man Tatum teamed up with Amanda Seyfried last year for romantic drama Dear John.

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks the movie was directed by Lasse Hallstrom and follows a soldier who fall is love with a college student while he is on home on leave.

The central relationship between Savannah and John is what drives the movie and there is great chemistry between the pair that you can't help but hope that they make it through all the obstacles that are thrown in their way.

Anyone who cried into their hankie over The Notebook, a novel also penned by Sparks, then you may just shed a few tears over John and Savannah.

The Eagle

But this week he returns to the action movie, all be it in a historical context with The Eagle.

Based on the novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, Tatum takes on the role of Marcus Aquila, a young Roman soldier endeavours to honour his father's memory by finding his lost legion's golden emblem.

Tatum leads the movie well as 'the perfect Roman' keen to lead his legion well and fight with honour.

But Marcus is a man who is haunted by the past and Tatum plays him as a tortured soul, but a man with a real heart.
