For his role as notorious prisoner Charles Bronson actor Tom Hardy underwent a physical transformation of putting on three stone to play the part.
So to celebrate the release of the film, and Hardy's dedication, FemaleFirst took a look at other actors who have raiding the fridge all in the name of art.
Charlize Theron put on 30lbs for her role as the serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster and, along with her prosthetic teeth, was almost unrecognisable. It did however earn her a Best Actress Oscar.
George Clooney also put on 30lbs for his role as Bob Barnes in political thriller Syriana, this role also won him a Best Supporting Actor OScar.
After getting himself fighting fit for the boxing scenes in Raging Bull Robert De Niro them put on a staggering sixty pounds, production stopped for four months so he could put on the weight, for Jake LaMotta's later career. And yes DeNiro won an Oscar who would have guessed.
Russell Crowe is another actor who put on sixty three pounds for Body of Lies (63lbs) while Vincent D’Onofrio put on seventy pounds for Full Metal Jacket.
And while some actor piled on the fat for their role other actor have bulked up for physically demanding roles.
Hilary Swank got into major shape as she put on almost twenty pounds for her role as the boxing loving Maggie Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. She won an Oscar, I see a trend developing here.
Ryan Reynolds piled on 22lbs for Blade Trinity while Jake Gyllenhaal put on 25lbs for Sam Mendes' Jarhead.
And Will Smith is just another actor that put his body through it for a boxing movie as he put on 36lbs for Ali, he was Oscar nominated.
However while a string of actors have put on weight for their role some have shed their pounds.
Those who have suffered for their art include Tony Maguire who lost 25lbs for his role as a jockey in Seabiscuit.
Oscar winner Adrien Brody dropped 30lbs for Holocaust drama The Pianist as did Michael Fassbender most recently for his portrayal of Bobby Sands during his hunger strike in Steve McQueen's Hunger.
Matt Damon lost forty pounds for Courage Under Fire and Tom Hanks dropped an impressive 55lbs for Castaway.
But if you think that is impressive check out Christian Bale in The Machinist who dropped a massive 63lbs for the role. He then repeated this for Rescue Dawn that's dedication!
