Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

Our look at some of the most highly anticipated movies of 2013 continues today as we move into the second quarter of the year.

And the second quarter of 2013 can only mean one thing... and that is the start of the blockbuster summer - and boy is it set to be a good one.

April

But before the blockbuster summer kicks off one of the most anticipated films comes in the form of The Place Beyond The Pines.

We will have already seen Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad but he will return in the Derek Cianfrance directed film.

The movie sees Gosling team up with Bradley Cooper while Rose Bryne, Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta are all also on the cast list.

A motorcycle stunt rider considers committing a crime in order to provide for his wife and child, an act that puts him on a collision course with a cop-turned-politician.

The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains.

This is year it will be Oblivion that kicks off the summer of blockbuster movies as Tom Cruise returns to the big screen.

It is the first film of the year for the actor and sees him tackle the adventure/sci-fi genre.

Oblivion is a big screen adaptation of the graphic novel by Joseph Kosinski and Arvid Nelson and Kosinski himself has adapted it for the big screen.

You have got the visual directing talent of Kosinski mixed with producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes so it is set to be a film that will look totally fantastic.

A top quality cast has been assembled as Morgan Freeman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo and Andrea Riseborough are all on board and it is a film that looks set to get the blockbuster season off to a good start.

But if there is one blockbuster movie that everyone is looking forward to this summer then it is Iron Man 3 as Robert Downey Jr is back as Tony Stark.

And while the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle are back it is all change in the director's chair as Shane Black takes over the helm.

This film is set to take Iron Man on his biggest journey to date as his personal world is destroyed.

Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley are two of the key additions to the cast list as they take on the roles of Aldrich Killian and The Mandarin.

May

There is a mix of everything in the month of May and another blockbuster hits the big screen in the form of Star Trek Into Darkness.

The movie is the follow up to the 2009 reboot and sees J.J. Abrams back in the director's chair. Now I was a big fan of the first film but the early trailers promise that this is going to be bigger and better than its predecessor.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are back as Kirk and Spock while Zoe Saldana, Karl uRban and Simon Pegg will also be returning.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the big new addition to the franchise and will play John Harrison - a character that does not exist in the original series.

But if the big budget blockbuster is not your thing then do not fear as Baz Luhrmann is back with his adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

We are finally going to get to see this movie after it got pushed back from the end of last year and it promises to be a periodic treat.

The movie reunites him with Leonardo DiCaprio while Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton are all also on a very exciting cast list.

The Great Gatsby is set to be a lavish, visually beautiful and exciting movie as F.Scott Fitzgerald's popular story is brought to life by some incredibly talented actors.

Comedy is also on the horizon in May as The Hangover Part III is set to bring the franchise to a close.

Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha are back while Todd Phillips is back in the director's chair for one final outrageous adventure.

Now Part II was more than a little disappointing two years ago and I am keen to see the director recapture the magic of the first movie.

June

As we head into June the movies just get bigger and bigger and one to look out for is After Earth as M. Night Shyamalan returns to the director's chair.

Shyamalan's career has taken a big of a nosedive in recent years but he could get back on track with this project as he teams up with Will and Jaden Smith.

It is the first time that father and son have worked together since The Pursuit of Happyness but this sci-fi adventure couldn't be more different.

After a crash landing, a father and son explore a planet that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier.

The movie promises to different to everything else this summer and lets hope Shyamalan delivers on the early promise he showed as a filmmaker.

If you love your zombie movies then World War Z could be the film for you as Max Brooks' novel is brought to the big screen.

Brad Pitt leads the cast as he takes on the role of a U.N. employee is racing against time and fate, as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic.

Marc Forster is in the director's chair while Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale and Mireille Enos are also on the cast list.

But if there is one movie that stands out this June then it is Man of Steel as Superman makes a return.

We last saw the caped crusader back in 2006 but this time Henry Cavill is in the lead role and Zack Snyder is in the director's chair.

The movie takes the franchise back to the beginning and, fingers crossed, it is set to be the start of some huge success for this character on the big screen.
