It's Complicated

It's Complicated

Starring: Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin
Director: Nancy Meyers
Rating: 3/5

Ok so It's Complicated has been out for a few weeks but I eventually got to see Meryl Streep's latest offering just last night.

Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has, after a decade of divorce, an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin).

But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, things start to take an unexpected turn. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable, an affair.

With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

Caught in the middle of their renewed romance is Adam (Martin), an architect hired to remodel Jane's kitchen. Healing from a divorce of his own, Adam starts to fall for Jane, but soon realizes he's become part of a love triangle.

It's been a while since we have had a laugh out loud romantic comedy but thankfully the drought is over with It's Complicated.

And I will be the first to admit that I didn't think I was going to like this but, and I'm happy to hold my hands up on this one, it was great.

Meryl Streep is at her comic best and quite frankly if I look half as good as she does when I'm her age I will be very happy!

She banters well with Alec Baldwin as their relationship goes down an unexpected path and it's obvious that both of them had a riot making this movie.

It's great to see middle-age relationships and romance take centre stage for a change flicking two fingers to an ageism Hollywood.

What's so great about the movie is a lot of people can identify with Jane who is a woman who has put her children over her own relationships, possibly too afraid to try and meet someone new.

The three central performances are really excellent, and bring most of the movie's humour, and really are the heart and soul of the movie.

However keep an eye out for John Krasinski who gets wind of Jane and Jake's affair and produces a great comic turn, it's a pity he isn't used more in the movie.

Meyer has once again produced a witty script that's so refreshing, this is usually a genre kept for younger actors it's just so great to see these mature stars let loose.

But it's a very honest performance from Streep who struggles to decide what it is she wants whilst being pulled in a million different directions, Streep alone is worth the admission fee.

While the movie is a tad too long it's a laugh a minute ride that sees the central cast all produce some great performances.

It's Complicated is out now.
