Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner

The actor has not only been part of the third biggest grossing movie of all time in the form of Avengers Assemble but he also returns to the big screen today with The Bourne Legacy.

And while Renner seems like a relative newcomer - bursting onto the scene with The hurt Locker - he has in the industry for nearly twenty years.

The actor made his big screen debut in 1995 when he appeared in National Lampoon's Senior Trip before moving into TV with the likes of Strange Luck and Deadly Games.

His career started to gather some momentum in the early noughties when he took on the role of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in movie Dahmer.

It was a performance that did turn some heads as he went on to be nominated at the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Male.

He went on to land roles in the likes of S.W.A.T., North Country and Lord of Dogtown working with stars such as Colin Farrell and Charlize Theron.

But it was the summer of 2009 and a movie called The Hurt Locker that he really broke through and made everyone sit up an take notice.

He took on the role of Sergeant First Class William James in Kathryn Bigelow's war movie which followed a bomb disposal team in Iraq.

The movie was about the experiences of that team on their day to day missions and not so much about the war as a whole.

The Hurt Locker was a critical smash and Renner's was praised for his fantastic central performance - going on to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.

Since then Renner has never looked back as he has gone on to be one of the most in demand actors in Hollywood.

A Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination followed for his role in the Ben Affleck directed movie The Town - which was another film that really won over the critics.

We saw him for the first time as HawkEye in last summer's Thor before he reprised the role in Avengers Assemble.

The movie has so far grossed in excess of $1.4 billion at the global box office and is the biggest grossing movie of 2012 so far.

The actor has also stepped into the Mission Impossible franchise with Tom Cruise - another movie that enjoyed big success.

But this week sees him take over the lead in an already well established franchise as the role of Aaron Cross is introduced in The Bourne Legacy.

The Bourne Legacy is the fourth film in the successful espionage franchise and the first film since The Bourne Ultimatum back in 2007.

Long time writer Tony Gilroy is in the director's chair for the movie while Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton are also on the cast list.

Renner has also completed work on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with Gemma Arterton, which is due out next year, as well as an untitled Games Gray movie.

Last week it was announced that there is a second Avengers movie in the pipeline, although who will be returning has not yet been made clear.

Jeremy Renner may have taken his time getting to the top but in just a handful of years he has proved that he can not only deliver great action performances but also fantastic drama.
