Jim Sturgess

Jim Sturgess

Jim Sturgess may have kicked off his career back in 1994 but the breakthrough for the actor/musician came in 2007 when he appeared in Across The Universe.

He is back on the big screen this week with his new movie One Day, which sees him team up with Oscar nominated actress Anne Hathaway.

The Browning Version was Sturgess first big screen appearance, it was a 1994 movie that was directed by Mike Figgis and starred Albert Finney.

For the next few years the British actor worked mostly in TV with I’m Frank Morgan and series Quest before finally getting his breakthrough.

And it was Julie Taymor’s 2007 project Across The Universe that provided that as he starred alongside Evan Rachel Wood in the musical.

The music of the Beatles and the Vietnam War form the backdrop for the romance between an upper-class American girl and a poor Liverpudlian artist.

The movie may have been met with mixed reviews but Across The Universe proved to be the catalyst for Sturgess’ career.

After a supporting role in The Other Boleyn Girl, alongside Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, he led the cast in 21.

Directed by Robert Luketic the movie was inspired by the true story of an MIT blackjack team who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

The all star cast included Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne and Kate Bosworth and the movie opened at #1 at the US box office.

Over the next couple of years she landed roles in Fifty Dead Men Walking, Crossing Over and Heartless before teaming up with Peter Weir in The Way Back.

Released at the end of last year the movie followed a group of prisoners who escaped from a Siberian Gulag during the Second World War.

The movie was inspired by Keith Clarke’s novel The Long Walk and saw Sturgess star alongside Colin Farrell, Ed Harris and Saoirse Ronan.

The movie was met well by the critics when it was released but struggled at the box office, failing to make back its budget.

One Day sees him return to the big screen as Lone Scherfig brings David Nicholls’s novel to the big screen.

After spending the night together on the night of their college graduation Dexter and Emma are shown each year on the same date to see where they are in their lives. They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day.

The actor has already finished work on Ashes, which also stars Luke Evans and Ray Winstone, and Upside Down, which sees him team up with Kirsten Dunst.

One Day is out now
