John Travolta

John Travolta

Where would Disco be without Travolta? Spawning fashion fads from Saturday Night Fever to Pulp Fiction, John Travolta’s career has swung between the oh so cool small budget flicks and big expense blockbusters.

To celebrate his up and coming film Old Dogs we have put together a comprehensive list of his most beloved performances.

1. Grease

Set in a 1950’s American high school, Greece was the ultimate youth musical, launching the careers of both John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

Travolta’s hilarious and tight trouser wearing character Danny Zuko became an icon of 1970’s ‘too cool for school’ pop culture and reignited an interest in musicals.

2. Pulp Fiction

The lives of several key characters intertwined in this early ‘90s classic, launching Quentin Tarentino into the super league of directors and re-launched the ailing career of Travolta.

Travolta played hitman Vincent Vega, not the brightest man in California but certainly one of the most charming. Taking to the dance floor at a local club, Travolta once again showed off his moves.

For his role as the 'Royale with Cheese' loving Vincent Vega he picked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

3. Saturday Night Fever

Playing an uneducated Brooklyn teenager, Travolta is mesmerising as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Manero’s highlight of the week is going to the local disco where he can don his three piece suit to become king of the dance floor.

Defining an era, Saturday Night fever has since become a cult classic for all things 1970s and disco.

4. Get Shorty

An adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 1990 novel, John Travolta slips into the shoes of Chili Palmer, a Miami loan shark who’s been sent to L.A to collect on a debt.

A film buff as well as loan shark, Chili works toward becoming a fulltime producer. Self referential, Get Shorty explores the darker side of Hollywood and the film industry.

5. Face Off

Directed by John Woo, Face Off is the story of Sean Archer (Travolta) and Castor Troy, Sean’s arch enemy and a major criminal played by Nicolas Cage.

A revolutionary medical technique allows both men to swap faces, and Sean takes on the physical appearance of Castor in an effort to infiltrate his organization.

A true classic for its action sequences, Face Off firmly placed Travolta in the action genre.

Other Travolta movies that are worth taking a look at include Hairspray, Travolta dressed as a woman... classic! As well as Look Who's Talking and The Taking of Pelham 123.

Old Dogs is released 19th March.
