Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has already had a very successful summer with the success of The Dark Knight Rises under his belt but this week he is back with his new movie Premium Rush.

Levitt is one of the most exciting actors currently working in Hollywood and 2012 promises to be his most successful year yet - Looper is another project that he has one the horizon.

Like many young actors Levitt kicked off his career in TV in the late eighties as he appeared in the likes of Stranger on My Land and family Ties.

Throughout the early nineties his has small movie roles as well as continuing with TV work but it was to be 3rd Rock From The Sun that was to be a major breakthrough.

He teamed up with John Lithgow and Kristen Johnston for the series and stayed with the show for 131 episodes.

It wasn't long before movies came calling and in 1999 he joined a cast of young talented stars, including Heath Ledger and Julia Styles, for 10 Things I Hate About You - which was a teen adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew.

The movie was directed by Gill Junger and while it performed modestly at the box office it remains one of the greatest teen movies of all time.

However it was to be the movie Mysterious Skin that showed off Levitt's full potential as he played a gay prostitute and child sexual abuse victim in the movie.

The movie and Levitt's performance received great reviews when the film was released and since then the actor's career has gone from strength to strength as Brick was another acclaimed performance for the actor.

And over the years Levitt is not an actor who has stuck to the same genre or what he knows best as he has mixed and matched his roles tackling a whole host of different genres.

The Lookout was a bank heist movie while Stop-Loss was a moving drama that followed returning soldiers from Iraq and the problems that they faced once they were home.

Despite all of these great performances Levitt was still very much the quiet man of Hollywood and that was until he took on (500) Days of Summer - a movie that was to send his star rising even further.

The movie saw him team up with actress Zooey Deschanel and follows a couple as their relationship falls apart.

The movie was a critical success and went on to become one of the most successful 'sleeper hits' of 2009.

As well as box office success for the movie there were some award nominations that came the way of the film as Levitt was nominated for a Golden Globe and the movie was nominated for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

In the last couple of years we have seen Levitt star in the mind-bending movie Inception as well as touching cancer comedy 50/50.

This year saw him take on the role of John Blake in The Dark Knight Rises - a movie that saw him reunite with director Christopher Nolan.

The movie has broke the $1 billion barrier and is the second biggest grossing movie of 2012 so far.

Premium Rush is the latest project for the actor as he stars alongside Michael Shannon and Aaron Tveit while David Koepp is in the director's chair.

Set in Manhattan Levitt plays a bike messenger who picks up an envelope that attracts the interest of a dirty cop, who pursues the cyclist throughout the city.

Sci-fi movie Looper will be released later this month while the actor will also be starring in the Steven Spielberg directed biopic movie Lincoln.

Premium Rush is released 14th September.
