Justin Timberlanke In Friends With Benefits

Justin Timberlanke In Friends With Benefits

This week sees singer turned actor Justin Timberlake return to the big screen with his new movie Friends With Benefits - which sees him star alongside Mila Kunis.

Timberlake is one of a few singers who have made a successful transition from music to acting - and that success looks set to continue.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we take a look at some of the acting stars who started out behind a microphone.

- Will Smith

Will Smith may have kicked off his career as The Fresh Prince with olde Jazz Jeff but it is in the acting world where he has become a megastar.

He is the only actor to have eight consecutive movies gross over $100 million at the U.S. box office and he has taken four movie to over $500 million worldwide.

He has starred in the likes of Men in Black, Independence Day, Bad Boys and Hitch and picked up an Oscar nomination for Ali.

We haven't seen him on the big screen since Seven Pounds back in 2008 but he is set to return as he reprises his role as Agent J in Men in Black III.

- Cher

Cher kicked off her career back in the sixties with Sonny with I Got You Babe and all that jazz but it wasn't until the eighties when she stepped into movies.

And here she has enjoyed enormous success with roles in the likes of The Witches of Eastwick and Tea with Mussolini.

But it was 1983 when she was recognised by the Academy for the very first time when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Silkwood - picking up the Golden Globe.

She got her hands on an Oscar four years later when she starred alongside Nicholas Cage in Moonstruck.

Cher returned to the big screen last year with Burlesque and lent her voice to Zookeeper earlier this year.

- Jamie Foxx

Ok so Jamie Foxx didn't kick off his career in music but in comedy, but he has released albums along the way, before finding his way into acting.

He kicked off his career back in 1992 with Toys and went on to appear in the likes of Any Given Sunday and Ali.

But it was 2004 when he really made his breakthrough with Ray and Collateral - both movies earning him an Oscar nomination.

Foxx took on the role of music legend Ray Charles in 2004 - a movie that earnt rave reviews and saw him bit up a Best Actor Oscar.

Collateral showed a whole different side to the actor as he teamed up with Tom Cruise in the crime thriller - he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Since then he has enjoyed success with Dreamgirls, The Soloist and, most recently, Horrible Bosses.

- Queen Latifah

There is not personality that shines as bright on the big screen than that of Queen Latifah - who has left her rapping days far behind her.

She moved into TV in the early nineties with Living Single and it wasn't' long before the movie roles started coming with the likes of The Bone Collector and Set If Off.

But it was her performance as Matron 'Mama' Morton in Chicago that made every sit up and take note as she delivered an Oscar nominated worthy performance.

Since then she has gone on to comedies such as Bringing Down The House and Taxi as well as Hairspray and The Secret Life of Bees.

She is set to return with Joyful Noise as well as once again lend her voice to the character of Ellie in Ice Age: Continental Drift.

- Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson was an American Idol contestant before Hollywood came knocking - finishing in seventh place in the third series.

Her vocal ability made her the perfect choice to play Effie White in Dreamgirls in 2006 - in what was her big screen debut.

Hudson was the best thing about that movie and she went on to pick up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance.

Since then she has gone onto Sex and the City and The Secret Life of Bees but she is set to return in a remake of The Three Stooges - which she is currently filming.

- Justin Timberlake

And of course we couldn't look at successful singer turned actors without looking at Justin Timberlake - who is doing very well for himself on the big screen.

He started out in boyband N*SYNC before going solo with the huge album Justified. The early noughties saw him make his movie debut with Longshot before going on to Edison, Alpha Don and Black Snake Moan.

He has found huge box office success voicing the character of Artie Pendragon in two of the Shrek movies and critical success last year with The Social Network.

The movie, which was directed by David Fincher, went on to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

He has already enjoyed success this year with Bad Teacher and is back with another comedy movie Friends With Benefits.

He leaves comedy behind later this year as he tackles sci-fi with Amanda Seyfried in In Time.

Friends With Benefits is released 9th September.
