Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep

Award’s season is in full swing and as you might imagine Meryl Streep is once again well and truly in the mix as both her performances in Julie and Julia and It’s Complicated have been recognised.

Yes the Golden Globes have done it again giving the popular actress two nominations in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category, and what are the chances that she will walk a way with the gong.

Streep has enjoyed a long and successful career and awards and nominations have followed her around from the off.

With twenty five Golden Globes nods, yes twenty five, over the years she has, as you might imagine, more nominations than any other actor, taking home six gongs.

She picked up awards for her roles in Kramer vs. Kramer, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Sophie’s Choice, Adaptation, The Devil Wears Prada and Angel’s In America.

And with this year’s Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy really being quite weak with Sandra Bullock for The Proposal, Marion Cotillard for Nine and Julia Roberts for Duplicity it’s highly likely Streep will walk away with the award.

And it’s her performances in Julie and Julia and comedy It’s Complicated that are under the award’s spotlight.

In Julie and Julia she takes on the role of Julia Child while Amy Adams is Julie Powell in writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell’s Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme.

Based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends...until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

In It’s Complicated Streep is Jane, the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has--after a decade of divorce--an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin).

But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable--an affair.

With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell), Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

And we mustn’t forget that the Oscars is just around the corner and, back in September, Streep was the red hot favourite to win the Best Actress award, for her role in Julie and Julia, because of the lack of great female performances in 2009.

However things now may not be so clear cut as a handful of actresses may have other ideas about who will be taking home film’s most coveted prize.

And while the nominations are yet to be announced you have to imagine that Streep will be amongst them.

For the Oscars there is no Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category, they all come under the heading of Best Actress, and it would be Julie and Julia that would be the performance to get her a nod.

As with the Golden Globes Streep is the most nominated actor with fifteen Oscar nods but, amazingly, she has just two wins.

She picked up an Academy award for Best Supporting Actress back in 1979 for her role in Kramer vs. Kramer before winning Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice in 1982.

So maybe it’s Streep’s time to finally get her hands on another Best Actress gong but with the possibility that she could be facing the likes of Carey Mulligan, Sandra bullock, Helen Mirren and    Gabourey Sidibe she may have to wait a little longer.

But sixty year old Streep shows no sign of slowing down and no doubt a string of nominations and awards are still going to come her way over the next few years.

It’s Complicated is released 8th January.
