Darth Vader

Darth Vader

"Luke, I am your father" the immortal line uttered by Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back has been revealed as the biggest movie misquote of all time, beating lines from the likes of Snow White and Dirty Harry in a poll of over 1,500 film fans.

Marking the release of the J.J. Abram's film Star Trek, a franchise with its own memorable misquote, LOVEFiLM.com polled its members on the most surprising mistakes in a bid to sort the buffs from the bluffs.

Real fans will of course know that it was "No, I am your father" delivered by David Prowse in the jaw-drop moment that has been eternally misquoted since its release in 1980.  A massive 17 per cent of the votes puts this blunder into first place as the biggest shocker.

The second biggest surprise to fans was from the much-loved fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs after years of mistakes turned "Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" into the "Mirror, mirror on the wall" line known today (15 per cent).

From a completely different film genre, Clint Eastwood's most quoted one-liner "Do you feel lucky, punk?" shot into third place with 13 per cent of the vote.

Hard nut Eastwood wannabes will be kicking themselves when they find out this Dirty Harry favourite is a rip-off of "Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?"

Casablanca's "Play it again, Sam" came in fourth place with 12 per cent. Contrary to belief, this line was actually never spoken in the Oscar winning classic although we much prefer it to the longer and much less quotable "You played it for her, you can play it for me" If she can stand it, I can. Play it!"

Not that we're one to argue with Hannibal Lector, but the chilling Silence of the Lambs quote in fifth position (10 per cent) is a lie. "Hello Clarice" was in fact more a "Good evening, Clarice" not much nicer we know, but it's all in the details.

Star Trek's famous "Beam me up, Scotty!" was another shock to many in sixth position with nine per cent. The closest Captain James T Kirk came to the line was "Scotty, beam us up!" - as any 'Trekkie' will tell you.

1939 classic Gone with the Wind's "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn" even had its fair share of confusion with audiences mistaking the 'my dear' with the character Scarlett (seven per cent).

And in Field of Dreams one word made all the difference with the film's "If you build it, he will come" becoming "If you build it, they will come" to many in eighth position (six per cent).

Family favourite The Wizard of Oz also suffered from inaccuracies, with Dorothy's "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" line now generally known as "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto" (five per cent).

Scraping into tenth place was the 'definitive line' from The Graduate. Often quoted as "Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?" Dustin Hoffman's actual line was in fact was the decidedly less sexy "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?" (four per cent).
