Precious

Precious

Precious dominated the Independent Spirit Awards as it took five of the thirteen awards, including Best Picture.

Hosted by Eddie Izzard the ceremony celebrates independent filmmaking over the last twelve months, the awards ceremony was also celebrating it's 25th anniversary.

Despite it's gritty subject matter the movie has found itself in many of the Best Picture categories this awards season but the movie finally scored a win.

Lee Daniels also took home Best Director while newcomer Gabourey Sidibe won Best Actress. She takes on the role of an abused teenager who has two children by her father and she has found herself nominated at the Baftas, Golden Globes and Oscars for her performance.

Picking up her award the actress said: I'm so excited. I'm kind of a dork. Thank you to my fellow actors who taught me how to act. I showed up not knowing anything."

There were no surprises in the Best Supporting Actress category as Mo'Nique once again walked away with the gong. Their final award came in the form of Best First Screenplay for Geoffrey Fletcher.

Mo'Nique has dominated the Best Supporting Actress in recent weeks for her role as an abusive mother taking the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Bafta and the Oscar for her performance.

The Best Screenplay award went to romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer, perhaps a movie overlooked this awards season, for Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.

It's been a great weekend or Jeff Bridges as he walked away with the best Actor prize for Crazy Heart, the movie also won Best First Feature.

Picking up yet another award he said: "Crazy Heart is so dear to me, it's really a gem of an independent film. What makes these gems shine is passion."

There was also some award success for Woody Harrelson as he picked up Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Messenger. With Christoph Waltz dominating this award all season it was nice to see someone else get a look in.

An Education also walked away with a gong as it picked up Best Foreign Film and Anvil! The Story of Anvil picked up the Best Documentary Film prize.
