Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway made a name for herself back in 2001 in Disney's The Princess Diaries alongside Julie Andrews. And over the last seven years the twenty six year old has transformed herself from family favourite to serious Oscar contender.

She is back on the big screen this week as she reunites with Jake Gyllenhaal for Love and Other Drugs.

The Oscar nominated actress takes on the role of early onset Parkinson's Disease sufferer Maggie in the big screen adaptation of the novel Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy.

Maggie (Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won't let anyone - or anything - tie her down.

But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales.

Maggie and Jamie's evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.

This movie caps off an already successful year for the actress as she was part of the ensemble cast of Alice In Wonderland.

Hathaway took on the role of the White Queen in Tim Burton's version of the popular story - the film went on to break $1 billion at the global box office and is the second biggest grossing movie of the year.

The start of her career she took on fluffy roles in the likes of The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted but she has mixed and matched her role in recent years - showing that she is one of the most versatile actresses.

She kicked this off with Brokeback Mountain in 2005 when she starred alongside Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

She followed this hard hitting drama up with comedy as she starred as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada, alongside Meryl Streep.

However it was Rachel Getting Married that has cemented her a real leading lady moving away from the 'girl' roles with which is so closely associated.

Hathaway takes on the role of Kym who returns to the Buchman family home for the wedding of her sister Rachel after a stint in rehab. She brings a long history of personal crisis and family conflict along with her.

Her performance won over critics during it's time on the festival circuit and Oscar whispers surrounding the actress began long before the nominations were announced.

Hathaway scooped Best Actress at the Austin Film Critics Association, Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, Chicago Film Critics Association Awards National Board of Review Awards.

She also picked nods up at the  Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and the Academy Awards.

Hathaway has already completed work on One Day, which sees her team up with Jim Sturgess, and she has lent her voice to animation movie Rio.

Love and Other Drugs is released 29th December
