Sport has always had a place in film and every year new movies are released around a sporting theme. This relationship between sport and movies has also seen stars of sport stepping in front of the camera for memorable movie cameos.

The latest high-profile sports star to make a movie cameo is Lewis Hamilton, who stars as a self-title racing car in Cars 2. 

To celebrate the 21st November release of Cars 2 on Disney 3D Blu-ray, Blu-Ray & DVD, we take a look a ten of the best sports star cameos in film. 

1. Lewis Hamilton in Cars 2

The racing driver is animated as a car just as sleek and speedy as the real deal. Not only did Hamilton provide the voice but he also helped design his character that represents team GB in the World Grand Prix.

2. Mike Tyson In The Hangover

The morning after the night before and one of the few clues as to what went down is a live tiger in the bathroom. Mike Tyson’s tiger.

In a memorable scene the outlandish boxer (playing himself) sings along to Phil Collins as he suddenly punches Zach Galifianakis.

3. David Beckham in Goal!

Golden balls made his foray into film in the football trilogy about an underprivileged kid who makes it as a professional footballer.

Supposedly his cameo role saved the movie by securing its funding. On his performance Beckham admitted ‘I must admit, acting isn’t for me.’

4. John McEnroe in Mr Deeds

The hot-tempered bad boy of tennis joined forces with Adam Sandler’s Mr Deeds on a wild bender and ‘stupidity won in straight sets.’

5. Lance Armstrong in Dodgeball

Cancer survivor and Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong gives Vince Vaughan a pep talk as he is about to abandon his dodgeball team, and with it any hope of rescuing his struggling gym.

Lance pipes up ‘Quit? You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer, all at the same time.

But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and I won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I’m sure you have a good reason to quit’

6. Eric Cantona in Looking For Eric

The charismatic French footballer, actor and philosopher played himself in Ken Loach’s Looking For Eric.

A Manchester United fan saw visions of Cantona which helped him through difficult circumstance.

7. Michael Jordan in Space Jam

Regarded by many as the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan starred as himself in Space Jam, a film that saw the Loony Tunes take on Aliens in a must win basketball game.

8. Dan Marino in Ace Venture: Pet Detective

Quarterback Marino plays himself in Jim Carey’s cult comedy. Marino is kidnapped by a jealous former teammate and it is up to Ace to rescue him.

9. Lee Trevino in Happy Gilmore

The golfer plays himself, spotted throughout the film looking disgruntled and shaking his head in dismay. A subtle but unforgettable cameo role.

10. Anna Kournikova in Me, Myself And Irene

One time favourite in ‘Sexiest Women’ lists, tennis star Anna Kournikova played the part of a motel manager in the Farrelly brothers film about a cop with multiple personality disorder.
