Chris Pine

Star Trek is one of the biggest sci-fi series to ever grace television and the silver screen since William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and co kicked off the show in 1966.

This week sees J.J. Abrams take the franchise back to the beginning, happening to a lot of long-standing franchises of late, and with it comes a whole new cast to take on roles that were made famous in the sixties.

The film follows Enterprise's maiden voyage so lets introduce you to that cast that will crew her.

Chris Pine - James Kirk

Despite the likes of Matt Damon being linked to the role it is the virtual unknown Chris Pine that has the unenviable task of stepping into William Shatner's very large shoes.

Pine is best known for his roles in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and Smokin' Aces but this looks set to be the role that makes him a star.

Pine's Kirk is a tear-away who doesn't know where he belongs and is the son of a starship captain.

Zachary Quinto - Mr Spock

Despite appearing i the likes of 24, Crossing Jordan and So NoTORIous Quinto became a household name starring as Sylar, the killer of people with powers.

Although Leonard Nimoy returns Quinto takes on the role of the Spock, half human, half Vulcan and sporting the bowl hair cut and shaved eyebrows.

Adrien Brody had discussed playing the role with the director before Quinto was cast.

Simon Pegg - Montgomery "Scotty" Scott

British funnyman Simon Pegg was the only member of the cast that did not have to audition for his part, he was emailed by Abrams asking him if he wanted to play Scotty.

The ship's engineer is in exile for a transporter mishap that involved the Starfleet admiral's dog going missing.

Pegg shot to fame in Spaced and has gone on to become a star of both television and the big screen. He moved into cinema with British movies such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Zoe Saldana - Nyota Uhura

Saldana had not seen the original Star Trek series but JJ Abrams had requested that she play the role  of communications office Uhura.

Uhura is a very important tool on the ship acting as translator and is an expert in linguistics.

The actress shot to fame in 2003 when she starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl alongside Johnny Depp.

Karl Urban - Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Karl urban shot to fame in 2002 when he played Eomer in the second and third instalment of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Urban had been a long standing fan of the franchise and was cast in the role of Bones from his first audition.

Bones is responsible for sneaking Kirk aboard the Enterprise.

John Cho - Hikaru Sulu

John Cho is best known for his comedic roles in American Pie and Harold & Kumar but has moved into the big budget blockbuster for Star Trek.

The Enterprise's helmsman Sulu, originally played by George Takei, is an experienced member of the crew.

Anton Yelchin - Pavel Chekov

Over recent years Yelchin has slowly been building up his career with roles in along Came a Spider, Alpha Dog and Charlie Bartlett, in which he starred with Robert Downey Jr.

The Russian Starfleet office is a navigator and tactical officer aboard the Enterprise.

Eric Bana - Nero

The film's villain is the well established Eric Bana, known for his roles in Chopper, Black Hawk Down, Hulk and Troy.

The Aussie actor takes on the role of time-travelling Romulan villain Nero, who wants to destroy the galaxy.
