The Seventh Son

The Seventh Son

Our look at the most anticipated movies of 2013 is almost at a close and boy what a year it is going to be.

If you thought January through to September was exciting then the last three months of the year will bring us even more movies to get super excited about.

October

If there is one movie in October that is set to set the box office alight then it is Thor: A Dark World as the Marvel character gets a second standalone movie.

Chris Hemsworth returns to the title role after success with Thor back in 2011 and Avengers Assemble last summer - a movie that became the third biggest grossing movie of all time.

Events from Avengers Assemble will have an impact on the storyline for Thor: The Dark World and it promises to be bigger and better than its predecessor.

Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman are all back while Christopher Eccleston is one of the new names on the cast list.

It is also all change in the director’s as Alan Taylor, the director behind Game of Thrones, takes over the helm from Kenneth Branagh who decided not to return as director for the sequel.

Thor was one of the best first films of a franchise that Marvel has delivered and this is a franchise that looks set to get better and better.

Science Fiction is one of the big genres of 2013 with a whole host of exciting projects in the pipeline and Ender’s Game is one of them.

The movie is a big screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card and sees Gavin Hood back in the director’s chair - he has also penned the screenplay.

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.

This is one of the movies in this genre that I am most looking forward to this year as Asa Butterfield leads an all star cast that includes Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Ben Kingsley and Viola Davis.

2013 promises to be an incredibly strong year for sci-fi and Ender’s Game could well be one of the standout films.

The Seventh Son is another book adaptation that will be hitting the big screen towards the end of the year as Joseph Delaney’s book as been given the film treatment.

Directed by Sergey Bodrov the movie is an 18th century adventure that sees Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes and Julianne Moore star.

Many years ago Master Gregory (Bridges) imprisoned witch Mother Malkin (Moore) as he tried to fight off evil.

But now she has escaped and it threatening to unleash her terrible power upon the world - and only Master Gregory stands in her way. Master Gregory now must train his apprentice before the next full moon and all hope rest on this young man.

November

There really is only one November movie worth talking about and that is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - the second movie in the series.

The Hunger Games was one of the biggest films of 2012 and turned Jennifer Lawrence into a major star. She is back as heroine Katniss Everdeen while Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will be reprising the role of Peeta and Gale.

Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason are two of the big new characters to feature in catching Fire and Sam Claflin and Jena Malone will take on these roles.

It is also all change in the director’s chair as Gary Ross has decided not to return for the sequel and so the film will be helmed by Francis Lawrence.

Lawrence has been behind movie such as I Am Legend and Constantine and this is his first film since Water For Elephants. He is also set to helm The Hunger Games: Mocking ay - a movie that will be split into two parts.

Filming is still underway on Catching Fire and it is set to be one of the most eagerly anticipated films of this year.

December

Peter Jackson returned to the big screen with a bang in December with the first part of his The Hobbit trilogy and December will see us return to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

An Unexpected Journey was a real triumph and set the scene for the rest of the trilogy - much like The Lord of the Rings I expect the movie to get bigger, better and more exciting as we go along.

Marin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage will all be returning while Evangeline Lily and Luke Evans are some of the new additions.

We briefly saw Benedict Cumberbatch in the first movie as the necromancer but he will take on the role of Smaug the dragon in this second film - a performance that I cannot wait to see.

There may be excitement surrounding this franchise but we have a long time to wait to see the next instalment as it doesn’t hit the big screen until 13th December.

No December/Christmas film period is complete without a great animation film and this year it will be Frozen from Walt Disney.

Frozen is set to be the second project from Walt Disney animation this year after Wreck it Ralph at the beginning of 2013.

A mountain climber and a young girl named Anna journey through snowy peaks and dangerous cliffs to find the legendary Snow Queen and end the perpetual winter prophecy that has fallen over their kingdom.

The movie is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee while Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Idina Menzel have all lent their voice to the movie.

There is nothing like Boxing Day at the cinema and the movie that we will all be watching this year is Jack Ryan as the literary character returns to the big screen.

The movie sees Kenneth Branagh return to the director’s chair for the first time since Thor while Chris Pine rounds off a busy year as he takes on the title role.

Branagh will also star in the movie as will Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley in something that is quite a departure for the actress.
