We have all heard the saying 'behind every brave may there has to be a brave woman' - which is of course absolutley true.

And behind our summer action heroes, all of whom will be grcing the big screen over the coming months, are some very ballsy women played by some great actreses.

Yes all the attention may be on the central characters in movies like Thor and Captain America but we take a look at the women behind the heroes.

- Jane Foster/Natalie Portman (Thor)

Natalie Portman is not afraid to take on any and every role and this summer sees her return to the blockbuster with the role of Jane Foster in Thor.

Thor kicks off the summer blockbuster sees and the Oscar winner finds herself starring alongside Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård.

Jane Foster may have been a nurse in the comic book but the movie sees her become an astrophysicist as well as love interest for Thor.

The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Thor is released 27th April.

- Peggy Carter/Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger)

Hayley Atwell may have been around for a while with the likes of The Duchess, Brideshead Revisited and Pillars of the Earth under her belt but Captain America: The First Avenger looks set to see her career rocket.

She takes on the role of Peggy Carter in the movie, which sees Chris Evans take on the central character of Steve Rodgers.

Carter is a freedom fighter furing World War II as well as being a love interst for out hero.

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

Captain America: The First Avenger is released 29th July

- Angelica/Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

It's been four years since a Pirates of the Caribbean movie graced the big screen, yes it really was back in 2007.

Anyway Jack Sparrow may be back but Angelica, who comes in the form of the very lovely Penelope Cruz is a new face on the cast list.

On Stranger Tides sees Cruz team up with Johnny Depp for the first time since Blow - the movie also stars Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane.

Angelica is a women from Jack's past. Can she be trusted?

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is released 18th May.

- Carly/Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon)

It's fair to say that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was not a big hit with the critics when it was released two years ago - however it did go on to make a mint at the global box office.

But director Michael Bay is now back with the third movie in the franchise Dark Side of the Moon.

The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers' final battle.

And Megan Fox may have left the project but she has been replaced by the equally lovely Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who will take on the role of new character Carly.

Carly is a character from the original 1984 animated series and is set to replace Mikaela in Sam Witwicky's affections.

This is the first movie for the model.

Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon is released 1st July

- Carol Ferris/Blake Lively (Green Lantern)

Blake Lively made a splash last year with an excellent turn in Ben Affleck's The Town  - showing that there is more to her than just Gossip Girl.

She returns to the big screen this summer with blockbuster movie Green Lantern, which is based on the DC Comic, with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role.

Carol Ferris is the long term love interest of Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern as well as being vice president of Ferris Aircraft.

A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

Green Lantern is released 17th June.
