Youth In Revolt

Michael Cera is back on the smell screen this week as Youth in Revolt is released on DVD and Blu- Ray. Nick Twisp is a 16 year old boy who is unpopular and an outcast at school.

During a family vacation to a caravan park he meets Portia Doubleday and promptly falls in love. Standing in the way of a relationship with Portia are her strict parents and her poetry reading boyfriend.

To seduce Portia he creates an alter-ego called Francois Dilinger, a smooth French badboy who commits many rebellious acts in the pursuit for attention and love.

So to celebrate the release of the movie we took a look at the 10 film rebels.

What: Rebel Without A Cause
When: 1955
Rebel: Jim Stark (James Dean)
Storyline: James Dean plays a rebellious 17 year old teenager who moves to Los Angeles with his parents. He disobeys his parents, meets a girl and takes on the high school bullies.

This is a coming of age film about Jim Stark who tries to find himself while his parents constantly fight at home and he questions how to be a real man.   

Acts of Rebellion: Public drunkenness, knife fight, getting arrested, fighting and racing stolen cars which results in a fatality.

What: Robin Hood
When: 1991 and 2010
Rebel: Robin Hood (Kevin Costner 1991 and Russell Crowe 2010)
Storyline: Robin Hood is an outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor. He revolts against the King and becomes a hero.

He joins band of exiled villagers and with his Merry Men and love interest Maid Marion he is a libertarian rebel.

Acts of Rebellion: Steals and fights against the King John.

What: The Wild Ride / Velocity
When: 1960 / 1980
Rebel: Johnny Varron (Jack Nicholson)
Storyline: Johnny is a teenage punk gang leader who rebels against the world. He spends most days as a dirt track driver, parties a lot and causes constant trouble.

He is arrogant and has an issue with authority leaders. He eventually causes his own life to end in tragedy.

Acts of Rebellion: Drunkenness, played chicken on the road with trucks, kidnapped his friend’s girlfriend and kills several policemen

What: Fight Club
When: 1999
Rebel: Nameless narrator (Edward Norton)
Storyline: A quiet ‘everyday’ man suffers from insomnia and is bored with everyday life. He becomes obsessed with attending self-help groups for a source of emotional release.

One evening, his apartment is blown up accidently and he calls Tyler (Brad Pitt) a man he befriended during a flight. They soon live together and form a secret underground fight club, an anti-materialist and anti-corporate organization called "Project Mayhem."

Tyler and the nameless narrator are actually the same person with disassociated personalities in the same body.

Acts of Rebellion: Forms illegal fight club and fights numerous people on a regular basis. Fight club causes chaos and a member is killed by a police officer, it ends with Tyler attempting to erase debt by blowing up credit card company buildings.

What: The Matrix
When: 1999
Rebel: Neo (Keanu Reeves)
Storyline: The world is shown as a perceived reality through The Matrix, upon discovering this cover-up through Morpheus, Neo is thrown into rebellion against the machines.

Acts of Rebellion: Rebels against the ‘system’ and The Matrix to free people from the ‘dream world’ and into reality

What: Fish Tank
When: 2009
Rebel: Mia (Katie Jarvis)
Storyline: Mia is a troubled 15 year old who lives on a council estate. She is violent and aggressive but finds her passion in dance. This falls through and she eventually runs away.

Acts of Rebellion: Head butts dancer, excluded from school, drinks alcohol, has sex with her mother’s boyfriend and during a fight with her little sister she falls into the river and nearly drowns.

What: Thirteen
When: 2003
Rebel: Tracey Freeland
Storyline: Tracey Freeland is a thirteen year old girl whose mother is a recovering cocaine addict. She is teased at school but when buys stolen clothes she is accepted by the popular girls at school.

Tracey shop-lifts and her friendship with Evie, a popular girl at school soon turns into a downward spiral of rebellious behaviour.

Acts of Rebellion: Underage sex, alcohol, drugs, shop-lifting, cutting herself and piercings.

What: The Breakfast Club
When: 1985
Rebel: Five teenagers, John, Andrew, Claire, Allison and Brian
Storyline: Follows five rebellious teenagers from different social groups at school as they spend detention together on a Saturday.

It is a coming of age story as they realise they are not as different as they had once thought. 

Acts of Rebellion: different acts of rebellion which resulted in the joint detention on a Saturday, this included skipping class to go shopping and pulling the fire alarm.

What: Catch Me If You Can
When: 2002
Rebel: Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio)

Storyline: Before Frank’s 19th birthday he had successfully conned millions of dollars through many fake aliases.

He convinced numerous authorities and people that he was a doctor, a pilot and an attorney before his eventual capture.

Acts of Rebellion: Cheque forgery, arrested, fraud and stealing

What: The Warriors
When: 1979
Rebel: Cleon (Dorsey Wright), leader of ‘The Warriors’
Storyline: New York rebel street gang called ‘The Warriors’ are framed for killing a gang leader during a truce event meeting between all gangs.

The aim is to form an army against the police. A hit is then called on ‘The Warriors’ which quickly turns into a war.

Acts of Rebellion: Gang activity, arson, threats against the police, gun fire, arrested, murder and assault.

What: The Outsiders
When: 1983
Rebel: Numerous rebels, The Outsiders started the career of many well known names such as Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon.

Storyline: Gang conflict between teenage groups ‘The Greasers’ and ‘The Socs’ in Oklahoma. Some gang rebel members were as young as 14 years old.

The constant fighting caused a downward spiral with negative final consequences.

Acts of Rebellion: Knife violence, fights, murder, stealing and gun fire.
