G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra

Toys have had a big impact on cinema influencing a string of movies over recent years. And another is about to hit screens in the form of G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra.

The action packed movie, which brings together an all star cast of Dennis Quaid, Christopher Eccleston, Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum, is based on the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy franchise.

But G.I Joe is just another in a long line of toy influenced movies, another one coming this summer, FemaleFirst takes a look.

Of course I'm talking about Transformers a toy that was an eighties phenomenon that led to a cartoon series.

So it seems hard to believe that a live action movie only made the big screen back in 2007, but 2007 it was as Michael Bay helmed the big budget project.

The movie followed the Autobots and Decepticons arrival on earth as they were both looking for the allspark. As the two groups of Transformers go to battle Earth is stuck in the middle.

The film was a box office smash grossing in excess of $708 million and launched the careers of both Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox.

With success like that it seemed inevitable that a sequel would follow and it landed in cinemas this summer.

And lets face it's more of the same but god it's great! It may not have done well with the critics but that didn't stop fans flocking to cinemas and in the seven weeks since it's release it's grossed over $805 million at the global box office.

Despite Revenge of the Fallen not even being out of cinemas yet there is already a third movie in the pipeline and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most successful of the movies in this genre.

Another toy to get the big screen treatment are the Bratz based on dolls that only made their debut back in 2001.

The dolls, the four original being called Cloe, Jade, Sasha and Yasmin, were a huge hit and it wasn't long before there was a cartoon series to accompany the dolls. And the movie hit screen back in 2007.

The movie follows the four best friends as they begin high school together where their friendship is put to the test.

Unfortunately the film was met with mostly negative reviews and fans of the dolls seemed to stay away from cinemas as the movie grossed just over $26 million at the global box office, as well as finding itself nominated for a string of Razzies.

My Little Pony has been a popular toy for little girls for over twenty five years, first being introduced in 1981.

Off the back of these colourful toys has come a who franchise that has endured over the years moving into television and eventually movies.

It was 1986 when a feature length story finally hit the big screen for the very first time. However the success of the toys was not replicated at the movies as the film struggled at the box office taking just $6 million.

The eighties also brought us the Care Bears, hard to believe they were introduced through a series of greetings cards before being made into a toy line.

It was 1982 when the toy line went into production and it was just a year before a television series followed.

In 1985 their first movie followed The Care Bears Movie and it enjoyed more success than My Little Pony as it became the largest grossing animated movie, outside of Disney, at the time.

Two more films followed throughout the eighties.

It's not just movies adapted from toys that have found their way to the big screen but movies such as Small Soldiers and Toys have been heavily influenced by those things that we found fun as a child.

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is released 7th August.
