Sam Rockwell

Sam Rockwell

There appears to be a trend developing in Hollywood that the same old actors, some not particularly great, are bagging all the great roles producing the same old same old.

And a lot of talented actors are being swept under the carpet and not getting the credit that they deserve for their work.

Sam Rockwell is one of those actors as he returns to the big screen this week in Everybody's Fine alongside Robert De Niro.

So here at FemaleFirst we take a look at those actors who are famous and yet forgotten.

Sam Rockwell: kicked off his career back in 1989 and in that time has appeared mainly in independent and low key movies.

This was seen again this year when he starred in Duncan Jones' directorial debut Moon, producing a stunning performance in what was essentially a one man cast.

Despite the critical acclaim that came the way of the actor and the movie Rockwell was overlooked entirely this awards season.

However the actor looks set to go a little more mainstream this summer when he stars as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2.

Don Cheadle: is another who, despite a string of very fine performances over the years, still goes under the radar.

The actor is possibly best know for his role as Basher Tarr in the Ocean's franchise of movies but it's his work in the likes of Hotel Rwanda, Traffic and Crash that has cemented him as a real talent.

However he does have an Oscar nomination under his belt for his outstanding turn as Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda.

Like Sam Rockwell, Cheadle is also moving to the big budget blockbuster as he takes over the role of Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes in Iron Man 2.

Jeff Bridges: may finally get the recognition he deserves in a few weeks as the runaway favourite to scoop the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Crazy Heart.

The actor has enjoyed a film career that spans over thirty years but has chosen to stick to the smaller, more off beat movies.

The Big Lebowski remains one of his most famous roles but the actor, despite his great talent, has perhaps not got the recognition that he has deserved.

His Crazy Heart Oscar nod is the actor's fifth Academy Award nomination and he finally may get his hands on the biggest prize in movies.

Gary Oldman: finds himself, more often than not, cast as the villain in most of his movies including Dracula, Leon, The Contender and, most recently, The Book of Eli.

While the actor has got a long filmography the British actor is perhaps not as big a name as he should be. Having played a huge array of characters in his career he is yet to receive either a Golden Globe or Oscar nomination for his work.

Despite this he has found more mainstream success most recently as he took on the role of Sirius Black in Harry Potter as well as James Gordon in the new Batman movies.

Ed Norton: has appeared in some great movies, including the likes of American History X and Fight Club in his sixteen year career.

Unlike most of his peers Norton is a very versatile actor who has mixed and matched his roles through the years proving he is one of the best character actors around.

He has played a a lawyer in The People vs Larry Flint, an insane insomniac in Fight Club, a neo-Nazi white supremacist in American History X and a cuckolded husband in The Painted Veil.

With such power and intensity Norton is one of the best actors of his generation and lets hope he gets his hand on a much deserved Oscar.

Other actors who are a tad underrated include Colin Firth, who has only just bagged his maiden Oscar nod for his latest film A Single Man, Kevin Bacon, John Cusack and Joaquin Phoenix, shame he moved into music.
