Whatever Works

Whatever Works

Over the years director Woody Allen has worked with some of the most successful and beautiful actresses and Whatever Works is his latest movie.

This film sees him direct Evan Rachel Wood and Patricia Clarkson. So to celebrate the release of the movie on DVD we take a look at some of the filmmaker's muses.

- Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow was probably Allen's most inspiring muse - until the whole he-married-her-adopted-daughter mishap.

She starred in 13 of his films, including: A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, Zelig, Broadway Danny Rose, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, September, Another Woman, New York Stories, Crimes and Misdemeanours, Alice, Shadows and Fog, Husbands and Wives.

- Samantha Morton

Samantha Morton is one of the most successful British actresses of recent year as she has enjoyed working in movies as well as TV.

She teamed up with Allen in 1999 to take on the role of Hattie in Sweet and Lowdown, which also starred Sean Penn.

In the 1930s, fictional jazz guitarist Emmet Ray idolizes Django Reinhardt, faces gangsters and falls in love with a mute.

For her performance Morton picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

- Diane Keaton

Diane may be the original Woody Allen muse, and she'll always be my favourite for her Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall. (Fun fact! Her given name is Diane Hall.)

Although their romantic involvement ended before they ever made a film, they made five other films together besides AH, including Sleeper, Love and Death, Interiors, Manhattan, and Manhattan Murder Mystery.

*Academy Award winner for Best Actress

- Frieda Pinto

Frieda Pinto shot to fame last year when she starred in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire as Latika alongside Dev Patel.

Her performance caught the eye of the filmmaker as she was cast in his last movie You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger.

The movie follows a pair of married couples, Alfie (Hopkins) and Helena (Jones), and their daughter Sally (Watts) and husband Roy (Brolin), as their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds.

Pinto took on the role of Dia in the movie - who catches  the eye of Roy.

- Penelope Cruz

Penelope won an Oscar for her portrayal of the crazed, and crazy, ex-girlfriend in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

The movie was her only collaboration with the director and it proved to be one of her greatest roles as she starred alongside Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and Javier Bardem.

Two girlfriends on a summer holiday in Spain become enamoured with the same painter, unaware that his ex-wife, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture.

For her performance the actress picked up the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

- Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts is one of the most hard working actresses in Hollywood and has mixed and matched her roles in recent year.

The Oscar nominated actress teamed up with the actor/filmmaker this year for You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger.

She joined an all star cast of Josh Brolin, Freida Pinto, Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Gemma Jones in a movie which followed two married couples.

- Scarlett Johansson

The Iron Man 2 actress has starred in more Allen movies in recent years than any other actresses as she has appeared in three films.

She was last seen in Vicky Cristina Barcelona back in 2008, which saw her star alongside Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Rebecca Hall.

She made her debut in a Woody Allen movie in 2005 when she took on the role of Nola Rice alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Just twelve months she was in a second movie by Allen as she teamed up Hugh Jackman for Scoop, a movie that did struggle at the box office.

Debra Messing, Juliette Lewis, Rebecca Hall, Patricia Clarkson and Emily Mortimer are other actresses who have starred in Allen movies.

Whatever Works is out on DVD now.
