Zoe Kazan

Zoe Kazan

Ruby Sparks really was like not other romantic comedy last year and the film cemented actress Zoe Kazan as a talent to keep an eye on.

But Kazan is more than just an actress as she also wrote the screen play for Ruby Sparks and produced the movie as well - making her as big a force behind the camera as in front of it.

She kicked off her career back in 2003 when she made her big screen debut in Swordswallowers and since then she has gone on to appear in movies such as In The Valley Of Elah, Me and Orson Welles and Revolutionary Road.

As well as movie projects Kazan has also worked in TV with the likes of Medium, After Iraq and Bored To Death under her belt.

But it was with her last movie Ruby Sparks that she really grabbed everyone's attention as she teamed up with actor Paul Dano and directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

Ruby Sparks breathed new life into this worn genre last year as on the surface it looks like a bubbly and fun romantic comedy but strip that away and you have a darker movie that is both powerful and emotional.

It is hard to believe that this is Kazan's first movie screenplay as it is a very observant piece of work that looks at how we try to control relationships.

This was a funny charming, emotional and powerful movie that was so much more than I was expecting it to be.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of Kazan this year as she concentrates on the acting side of her career.

She has completed work on In Your Eyes with Nikki Reed and Some Girl(s) which will also star Kristen Bell and Emily Watson.

Also look out for her in The F Word with Daniel Radcliffe and Rafe Spall - the movie is directed by Michael Dowse.

While she has no writing projects for release this year Kazan is a real talent in this area as well and don't be surprised it we see her in the director's chair in the near future.
