The Fifth Estate

The Fifth Estate

Changing your appearance for a film role is all part and parcel of being a movie star: we are always seeing some of Hollywood's biggest names tweak the way that they look.

Hair colour is one of the changes that we see actors make most often. We are going to look at the actors who have gone blonde for a film, as Benedict Cumberbatch returns to the big screen.

- Benedict Cumberbatch - The Fifth Estate

Benedict Cumberbatch is looking a little different in The Fifth Estate this week as he has dying his locks bleach blonde.

The actor is taking on the role of Julian Assange in the new political thriller, which looks at the rise and impact of the website WikiLeaks.

Cumberbatch was sporting more of a black hair look for Star Trek Into Darkness this summer, now it is all change.

- Javier Bardem - Skyfall

One of the most startling things about Skyfall was the colour of Javier Bardem's hair.

The Oscar winner usually sports a crop of dark hair, but this time around he was blonde.

Bardem took on the role of Silva in the film, in what was a terrific villainous performance from the actor.

- Angelina Jolie - Girl Interrupted

But it is not just the boys that use a change in appearance to get into character, the girls are doing it as well.

Angelina Jolie has gone blonde for a film role on a few occasions, Girl Interrupted being one of the most famous.

The movie was based on the memoir by Susanna Kaysen and saw Jolie take on the role of Lisa Rowe, a troubled woman on a ward at Claymoore Hospital.

- Orlando Bloom - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Orlando Bloom may not have dyed his hair for the role of Legolas he still donned a blonde wig for the role.

Bloom and his blonde locks will be back this winter in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as he reprises the role for the first time in a decade.

- Ryan Gosling - The Place Beyond The Pines

The Place Beyond The Pines has been one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2013 so far as Ryan Gosling returned to the big screen.

Gosling showed off his blonde locks for the film as be played a motorcycle stuntman who puts his skills to the test to try and provide for his young son.

The movie saw Gosling team up with director Derek Cianfrance and actor Bradley Cooper.

- Emily Blunt - Looper

Emily Blunt is one of the best British actresses around and has made some great films over the years.

She was back in the autumn of 2012 in sci-fi film Looper, sporting a strawberry blonde look.

In the film she took on the role of Sara, a woman who is desperate to project her young son.

- Jessica Chastain - The Help

Jessica Chastain has a beautiful head of red hair, but we have seen her take on a few different looks in recent years.

She went bleach blonde in the big screen adaptation of The Help: the movie was her breakthrough performance and saw her pick up a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Earlier this year we saw her with a radical cropped black hair look for horror film Mama.

Other actors who have gone blonde include Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Nicholas Cage for Drive Angry, Jack Black in Tropic Thunder and Olivia Thirlby in Dredd.
