All Is Lost

All Is Lost

The Telluride Film Festival got under way yesterday and boats an impressive line-up of movies and stars.

It seems everyone is already talking about next years Oscars - so could a Best Picture winner be lurking amongst the Telluride Festival line-up?

We take a look at some of the standout films on the schedule this year; there are great actors and directors at every turn.

All Is Lost - released 29th November

If you are looking for great solo performances, then look no further than Robert Redford in All Is Lost.

Redford is already being praised for his terrific central performance as he plays a sailor who finds himself stranded at sea.

This is the second directorial outing for J.C. Chandor after making his debut with Margin Call. He has also penned the screenplay for the film.

All Is Lost is possibly the most challenging role of Redford's career and it is certainly unlike anything that he has done before - could this be a performance worth an Oscar nomination?

Gravity - released 8th November.

Gravity is a film that everyone already seems to be raving about since it received its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this week.

Alfonso Cuarón has already shown that he is a great sci-fi filmmaker with the fantastic Children of Men under his belt, but now he returns to this genre to take us into the darkness and unknown of space.

The movie follows astronauts Dr. Ryan Stone & Matt Kowalsky (played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) who find themselves drifting in space after an accident during a space walk.

Bullock and Clooney are the only cast members for a movie that looks set to explore the ideas of survival and fear. This movie is already being tipped as a possible Oscar contender.

Under The Skin

Under The Skin is set to see Scarlett Johansson return to the big screen as she teams up with director Jonathan Glazer.

The movie is based on the novel by Michael Faber and has been adapted for into a screenplay by Waler Campbell.

The sci-fi film follows Laura (Johansson) an alien in human form who has been tasked with picking up hitchhikers and sending them back home.

The film is also playing at Venice International Film Festival this week and Toronto at the beginning of next month.

Labor Day - released 7th February 2014

Kate Winslet is also set to make her big screen return in the new year with her latest film Labor Day.

This is her first major role since Carnage at the beginning of last year - she did appear in a segment of ensemble comedy Movie 42 - as she teams up with director Jason Reitman for the first time.

Labor Day is based on the novel by Joyce Maynard and follows a mother and her son who off a stranger a ride. But when they discover that he is an escaped convict on the run they find themselves in danger.

Winslet is joined on the cast list by the fantastic Josh Brolin, Tobey Maguire and youngster Dylan Minnette.

It is great to see Winslet back on the big screen in a dramatic role, and Labor Day looks set to be a movie not to miss.

Inside Llewyn Davis - released 24th January 2014

Inside Llewyn Davis marks the return to the director's chair for Joel and Ethan Coen, in what is their first movie since the success of True Grit back in 2011.

The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Prix Award, and it looks set to be another triumph for the brothers.

The movie follows a singer/songwriter who tries to navigate the New York folk music scene of the 1960s.

Oscar Isaac will lead an all star cast that includes Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and Justin Timberlake.

Joel & Ethan Coen are Oscar favourites so don't be surprised to see them in the mix at the beginning of next year.

Nebraska - released 6th December.

It was the beginning of 2012 that Alexander Payne enjoyed huge critical success with The Descendants, now he is back with his new film Nebraska.

Bob Nelson has penned the screenplay and follows an estranged father and son as they travel from Montana to Nebraska to claim a million dollars.

The movie competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where Bruce Dern won the Best Actor Award.

Dern leads a cast list that includes Will Forte, June Squibb, Bob Odenkirk and Stacy Keach.

Payne has a knack of making movies that are story and character driven, Nebraska looks set to follow on that fine tradition.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour - released 15th November

Blue Is The Warmest Colour has been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit all year, and now it is one of the movie not to miss at Telluride.

Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche this French drama won the coveted Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and seems to be winning fans wherever it plays.

The movie follows the budding romance between Adele and Emma - played by Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux.

Telluride Film Festival runs 29th August - 2nd September.
