There’s nothing quite like trying to solve a gripping mystery. In celebration of the release of The Little Stranger, a darkly mysterious period drama based on Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel, today (September 21) in UK cinemas, we’re taking a look at some of the most gripping mysteries ever to grace our screens.

Murder on the Orient Express

Based on Agatha Christie’s classic novel, Murder on the Orient Express features an impressive star-studded cast including star-and-director Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley. The film follows Poirot as he tries to solve a murder on the eponymous European train journey in the 1930s. The film’s central mystery left audiences begging for more of Christie’s classic mysteries, and so a sequel, Death on the Nile, is due to be released in 2019.

Big Little Lies

Featuring an ensemble cast including the A-list stars like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz, Big Little Lies follows the stories of five different mothers of children at the same prestigious school in glamorous Monterrey – but it’s also the story of a murder. We don’t know who it is that gets murdered, let alone who did it. It’s an intense murder mystery drama which returns for a second season soon – with the addition of Oscar winner Meryl Streep.

Black Swan

Black Swan is a beguiling, twisted thriller which follows a ballerina (Natalie Portman) as she appears to slowly lose her mind – leading us to ask the question, has Portman’s character lost it or is there some foul play going on after all? The featured was nominated for a slewof Academy Awards, with Portman winning the prestigious Best Actress gong as well a slew of other nominations and wins for her gripping portrayal.

Twin Peaks

This cult classic, directed by David Lynch, originally aired in the early 90s and was revisited over 20 years later in 2017. The series follows Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Agent Dale Cooper as he investigates the murder of the town’s homecoming queen. While the original series was short-lived, the series has gained a cult following in the decades since.

The Little Stranger

The Little Stranger is based on Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel of the same name. The film is a darkly mysterious period drama and boasts a stellar cast including Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Wilson, Charlotte Rampling and Will Poulter.

The film tells the story of Dr Faraday (Gleeson), the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how disturbingly, the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own.
