The Lion King

The Lion King

Disney have created some truly wonderful movies of the years as well as some memorable characters. This week sees the fifty send movie hit the big screen in form of Frozen.

Great movies always means box office success, and we take a look at how well these movies have performed over the years.

- The Lion King - $987,483,777

Hard to believe, but The Lion King will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary next year - yes it really was released back in 1994. Sorry for making a few of you, including myself, feel very old.

Anyway. The movie was the 32nd Disney movie and it remains one of the most loved.

The movie follows Simba, who is tricked into thinking he killed his father by his uncle. The guilt ridden lion cub flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future King.

These great characters and wonder film music from Elton John proved to be a huge hit as the film has grossed over $987 million worldwide.

The only animation film to perform better at the box office than The Lion King is Toy Story 3.

- Tangled - $591,794,936

Tangled was released back in 2010 and saw the studio return to CGI driven animation after traditional hand-drawn style of The Princess and the Frog.

The movie was based on the fairytale Rapunzel and follows a young girl who had been kept in a tower all her life.

Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi teamed up to bring the characters to life, while Nathan Greno and Byron Howard were in the director's chair.

If you haven't seen Tangled then you really should check it out as it really is a lot of fun. It is packed with larger than life and funny characters as well as another wonderful soundtrack.

Tangled was a box office success upon release and went on to gross in excess of $591 million worldwide.

- Aladdin - $504,050,219

The early nineties was a golden period for Disney as they produced some of their classic movies... Aladdin was just one of them.

Sandwiched between Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, Aladdin was based on the Arab folktale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from One Thousand and One Nights.

Ron Clements and John Musker were in the director's chair and really did create a wonderful and mysterious world to set this film.

This movie features one of the greatest Disney character of all time - of course I am talking about the genie - Robin Williams really did kick off the trend of big named actors lending their voice to animation projects.

Aladdin was a box office smash and while two sequels did follow, they were never quite able to capture the magic of the first film.

- Wreck It Ralph - $471,222,889

It is not very often that we get two Disney movies in one year, but that is exactly what has happened in 2013. Wreck It Ralph hit the big screen at the beginning of the year and introduced us to Ralph.

Ralph is a video game villain who wants nothing more than to be the hero... so he sets off to fulfil his dream. Sadly, he same to cause chaos no matter where he goes.

Wreck It Ralph marked the feature film directorial debut of Rich Moore - who also penned the screenplay - but he is no stranger to animation with Futurama and The Simpsons under his belt.

Wreck It Ralph was both a critical and commercial hit, and it went on to pick up Best Animated Feature nominations at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

- Tarzan - $448,191,819

Tarzan is quite often a Disney film that gets overlooked but it is the fifth highest grossing of all time.

Released in 1999, the movie is based on the story Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and is directed by Chris Buck and Kevin Lima.

The movie follows Tarzan, who has been raised by gorillas, as he tries to decide where he belongs.

Tarzan was not only a hit at the box office but it was won over the critics. The film was nominated for a string of Annie Award and picked up an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy for Best Song.

- Beauty And The Beast - $424,967,620

Beauty and the Beast remains my favourite Disney movie - hard to believe it was 1992 when it hit the big screen.

Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, the movie followed Belle as she gives up her own freedom for her father's when he is captured by the Beast. But during her time with the Beast she discovers there is a heart under that ferocious facade.

Beauty and the Beast was the first animation film to be nominated for Best Picture - a feat that would not be achieved again until Up came along.

Beauty and the Beast remains one of Disney's greatest films and one of the most loved.

Frozen is released 6th December.
