Boyhood

Boyhood

Boyhood was the big winner at the Golden Globes last night as it scooped three awards and positioned itself as a major Oscar contender.

Boyhood walked away with Best Picture, Drama, Best Director for Richard Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. The movie took twelve years to make and saw the same group of actors return to the project to chart the development of a young boy.

Boyhood saw off the challenge from Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Selma, and The Theory of Everything to scoop the Best Picture Award, while Linklater was up against Wes Anderson, Ava DuVernay, David Fincher, and Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The Golden Globes is the first big awards ceremony of the year, and gives a hint as to where the Oscars may go. However, it is a fairly open race this year and we could see many other movies and performance win between now and the Oscars.

Eddie Redmayne flew the flag for Britain as he won Best Actor (Drama) for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Fellow Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo were also nominated alongside Steve Carell and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Michael Keaton walked away with the Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) award for his central performance in the critically acclaimed Birdman. It looks like it could be a two horse race between Redmayne and Keaton for the Best Actor Oscar.

Julianne Moore was the hot favourite for the Best Actress (Drama) gong for her performance in Still Alice, and she did scoop the award. There was also success of Amy Adams, as she won Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) award for Big Eyes.

There has been a lot of talk about Edward Norton as a real contender for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in recent weeks, but it was J.K Simmons who triumphed last night for his performance in Whiplash.

Arquette saw off the challenge from Keira Knightley, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep to make it a hat trick for Boyhood.

The race to the Oscar still remains wide open - except perhaps in the case of Best Actress - and it is going to be an interesting few weeks as the awards ceremonies come thick and fast. The Oscar nominations will be announced later this week and we will finally get to see who will be the runners and riders for the biggest prize in film.
