Godzilla Vs. Kong has been a long time coming, and since we’ve had solo films for both monsters, it was high time the Earth’s two massive titans met.

Here, we give you a spoiler free review of the much-anticipated movie, to let you know if it lived up to the hype.

The synopsis

Since 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla has been thought of as the saviour of the planet as he took down King Ghidorah, and took his place as the alpha titan.

As for Kong, the late 1970s were when Monarch (the team that searches for and researches titans) discovered the gigantic ape, and it seems they have been monitoring him ever since, in a controlled environment he knows isn’t his real home.

When a team of scientists, who have been researching the hollow Earth theory, realise that Kong can lead them to a source of power inside the hollow Earth, they chain him up and plan to take him to it.

From then on, the movie focuses on each creature until the time comes for them to try and prove who is really boss on this planet. However, something perhaps more sinister, and more dangerous, lurks in an Apex facility in Hong Kong, threatening both titans.

As Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends figure out what Apex is planning, Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) and her team try to find a way to help Kong find his true home.

In a film about two giant titans fighting to prove their worth, who will prevail?

So, what did I think?

After not being able to attend the cinema for so long, I would definitely say that Godzilla Vs. Kong was the perfect film to re-introduce you to the cinematic experience.

Since I had seen both Kong and Godzilla separately in their own brilliant movies, it was simply fantastic to see such exceptional beasts battle it out on the big screen.

First of all, and perhaps most importantly, this film looked absolutely stunning. The use of special effects and CGI was incredible, and every single close-up shot of the creatures looked phenomenal. The camerawork added to this surreal aesthetic was also impressive, as during an action scene we zoom in on Kong, creating an almost found footage moment which made this movie seem so surreal.

I could see every single hair on Kong’s body, and the way he interacted with his surroundings was amazing; and as for Godzilla, his scales were stunning to look at and his facial expressions were once again, phenomenal.

As for the story, I found it both a hit and a miss. The story as a whole, when you break it down, was simple enough; two titans live on Earth and it seems, once Kong is taken from Skull Island, only one can survive.

However, there were a few points within the movie where certain things were simply left unexplained. Ren Serizawa, an important member of the Apex company, had a very familiar name. I remembered that Dr Serizawa was a character from the 2014 and 2019 Godzilla movies; so I thought there may be a connection there, perhaps a grandson or another family member.

No such luck; he simply has the same name it seems, which is a very odd choice to have a character with that name and not explain it, as Dr Serizawa was a significant character in the previous two films.

Despite a couple of unexplained plot points or characters, and maybe one or more pointe where the plot was see-through, the movie was still an absolute triumph. The way Kong is shown made me feel sympathy for him as he’d been taken from the only place he’s ever known, to then be attacked by Godzilla.

Godzilla was shown in a somewhat negative light, as he seemingly is attacking cities for no reason; Madison seems to be a plot driven character, who is only there to prove that Godzilla is still on the side of the humans, and something must be provoking him.

The fight scenes, of course, were sensational. Kong had such a hefty presence, and his anger was felt with each swing of his fists; and every heavy, rage-fuelled breath Godzilla took held my attention as the giant beast took to the water or charged across the landscape.

The music that accompanied the film, Godzilla’s theme in particular, I thought was incredible. The bass-heavy theme signalled the appearance of the King and while some may say it was overused, I disagree as I never got tired of hearing it, as I knew that meant Godzilla was around, somewhere…

Godzilla Vs. Kong is a brilliant movie, with an albeit decent plot, but with sensational musical scores, phenomenal cinematography, and two brilliant titular characters that have held my attention since their first solo films.

This movie is definitely one to watch.

New to Netflix, but originally released in 2019, Brightburn seems to answer the question many fans of DC have wondered; what would it be like if Superman was evil? While the movie does not relate to DC in any way, it seems as though the Man Of Steel’s story was at least an inspiration for this horror flick...
