The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Glasgow Film Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary in February, and they have brought together a terrific line-up of movies.

Sixty of the films of the programme will receive their UK premiere, while fifty-seven will get their Scottish premiere at the festival.

We take a look at some of the movies that we are excited to see.

- The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel will open the 2014 Glasgow Film Festival as the film receives its UK premiere.

The movie marks the return of Wes Anderson to the director's chair as he brings together a wonderful ensemble cast.

Ralph Fiennes will lead an all-star line-up that includes Jude Law, Adrien Brody, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray - to name just a few.

Anderson has a knack of making slightly off the wall movies, and The Grand Budapest Hotel promises to be just that.

The Grand Budapest Hotel recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

- Under The Skin

Under The Skin will close the festival as Scarlett Johansson returns to the big screen.

Under The Skin sees her team up with director Jonathan Glazer as they bring the novel of the same name by Michel Faber to the big screen.

Johansson takes on the role of an alien in human form and is joined on the cast list by Paul Brannigan and Krystof Hádek.

Under The Skin is the story of an alien in human form. Part road movie, part science fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes.

Under The Skin will be hitting the big screen in March and will kick off a very busy period for the actress.

- Starred Up

Starred Up is a movie that has been doing incredibly well on the festival circuit, and has picked up eight British Independent Film Awards.

Starred Up sees David Mackenzie return to the director's chair, while up and coming star Jack O'Connell is set to star.

The movie follows a troubled and explosively violent teenager is transferred to adult prison where he finally meets his match - a man who also happens to be his father.

Starred Up received its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and was part of the official competition at the BFI London Film Festival - it really is not to be missed.

Jack O'Connell is an actor to keep an eye on over the next year or so, and this could well be the film that puts him on the movie map.

- Half of a Yellow Sun

Just about everyone is talking about Chiwetel Ejiofor as he has picked up an Oscar nomination for 12 Years A Slave. He is set to return to the big screen with Half of a Yellow Sun.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and sees Biyi Bandele in the director's chair.

The movie follows the lives of four people during the struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and has been adapted for the big screen by Bandele.

Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Joseph Mawle and Hakeem Kae-Kazim join Ejiofor on the cast list.

- A Long Way Down

Another exciting cast list to watch out for comes in the form of A Long Way Down - the big screen adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel.

Aaron Paul, Rosamund Pike, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Pierce Brosnan, and Sam Neill are all on board, while Pascal Chaumeil is in the director's chair.

The movie follows four people who meet on New Year's Eve and form a surrogate family to help each other their difficult periods in their lives.

High Fidelity and About A Boy are just some of Hornby's books that have been adapted for the big screen, but A Long Way Down looks set to be a funny and charming movie.

- 20 Feet From Stardom

20 Feet From Stardom is one of the most talked about documentaries of the last twelve months; it has just been nominated for an Oscar.

The Glasgow Film Festival has a very strong documentary field this year, and 20 Feet From Stardom is one of that films that you cannot miss.

Directed by Morgan Neville, 20 Feet From Stardom looks into the lives of backing singers - people who are never quite in the spotlight.

We look into the lives Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Táta Vega - along with many others.

20 Feet From Stardom is in with a real shot of winning the Best Documentary Oscar, so do catch this movie at the festival.

- Locke

Locke marks the return of Tom Hardy to the big screen, and sees the actor on top form.

I had the chance to catch this film at the BFI London Film Festival, and it really is an incredibly engrossing watch.

Ivan Locke (Hardy) has worked hard to craft a good life for himself. Tonight, that life will collapse around him as he makes an important car journey.

Hardy never leaves the car and while he may not have anyone to play off, he delivers a powerful, raw, and emotional performance.

Steven Knight is in the director's chair and penned the screenplay for what is a really tremendous and riveting film.

- Blue Ruin

Blue Ruin is a movie that has been whipping up a storm at Sundance, and now it is heading to the Glasgow Film Festival.

The movie sees Jeremy Saulnier return to the director's chair for what will be only his second feature film. His writing skills are also on show, as he has penned the screenplay.

The movie follows a man who arrives at his childhood home with revenge on his mind.

Blue Ruin is a movie that has already been a hit on the festival circuit, and is set to be one of the highlights in Glasgow.

- The Double

Richard Ayoade showed his feature film directorial debut Submarine at the Glasgow Film Festival, and now he is back with The Double.

This is the second feature film for Ayoade as director, and he has also penned the screenplay.

He has brought together a great cast as Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, and Sally Hawkins are all on board.

Eisenberg plays Simon, a timid and isolated man who is overlooked at work.

When James, a new co-worker arrives, he upsets the balance because he is both Simon’s physical double and his opposite: confident and good with women. Then James slowly starts taking over Simon’s life.

Other movies to watch out for at the festival include My Name is Hmmm, Teenage, Mood Indigo, Before the Winter Chill and Witching and Bitching.

The Glasgow Film Festival runs 20th February - 2nd March.
