Mood Indigo

Mood Indigo

Starring: Audrey Tautou , Romain Duris, Omar Sy

Director: Michel Gondry

Rating: 3/5

Michel Gondry returns to the director's chair this week with Mood Indigo: his first narrative feature film since The We and the I back in 2012.

If you are looking for a film that is unlike anything else around this summer, then Mood Indigo could well be the film for you. However, Mood Indigo is perhaps not as good as some of Gondry's previous work.

Mood Indigo tells the surreal and poetic tale of Colin (Duris) and Chloe (Tautou) and their idyllic love-story.

Set in a fantasy version of Paris, their romantic adventure is turned on its head when Chloe falls sick and discovers a water lily growing in her lung...

There is no denying that Gondry is a one of a kind filmmaker - there really is no one else like him making movies at the moment - and Mood Indigo is another film where his imagination is allowed to run wild.

However, this is a movie where you feel that Gondry is not totally in control. It is ok if you are wacky and wild, but the story does have to have some purpose and cohesion - sadly, this does seem to be a bit lacking this time around.

Having said that, this doesn't stop Mood Indigo from being an intriguing watch - it just lacks the magic that we saw in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Mood Indigo is a movie about romance and Tautou and Duris do make a great and very watchable couple. It is a shame that the characters and Chloe and Colin are a little flat.

Don't get me wrong, Mood Indigo is a movie that I did enjoy - it is so easy to get carried away in a Gondry movie because there is so much to grab your attention. Mood Indigo really is no different, as it is a stylish and beautiful looking movie.

Sadly, this time around, is a little bit of style over substance and the end result will leave you a little disappointed. However, there is plenty to enjoy along this unique ride.

Mood Indigo is out now.
